2023-24 Premier League Thread

Yeah, deciding things by a majority vote is beyond the pale for the sport of football. 🙄

Any person who watched Bruno run up from five yards away and deliver a forearm to the side of the head and says, nah not a red card for me, I don't want that person involved in football in any capacity and they managed to find two of those people. If they had just said that they didn't see enough clear evidence to overturn the goal, but they all went, Bruno absolutely should have been sent off, fine. They're wrong, but I can at least see they're not insane.

I also don't understand the rhetoric that because the defender is jumping forward its not a foul when you shove him in the back. I think its a very simple question you have to ask, if he doesn't get pushed in the back, does he get his head to the ball. The answer is almost certainly yes. The second question is does the ball bounce off his outstretched arms allowing him to control it. Also yes.

being incapable of admitting to one’s own clear and obvious error, while deriding others judgement is certainly rich.

Havertz should have gone but not Bruno... Was the panel made up of Alan Shearer, Kevin Keagan and the Ameobi's? You aren't helping your credibility by having the only people on earth who don't think Bruno should have been sent off on your panel and running VAR. Havertz was an orange card situation for sure and I think if the ref had given red, VAR would have upheld it. He got super lucky that he didn't actually make much contact, because it was super reckless and dangerous, but he didn't make any contact while he was flying through the air and instead made contact on the ground with just the trailing leg. If he had gotten sent off I might have thought it was a little harsh since the actual foul was not bad, but his actions were super dangerous so I would have understood. I don't understand the type of person who can look at what Bruno did and not just immediately go, well that's clearly a red card, not sure why we're even talking about this?

This diatribe about them saying Bruno’s foul wasn’t a red……when they said it should have been a red?

Their findings were.

- it was a goal.
- missed red on bruno
- missed red on Havertz

they agree it should be a red and you’re still complaining.

@Ed H in Pasadena funny how similar the red cards were for us vs Chelsea, as they were for you against us.

Romero straight red, had echoes of Curtis Jones red card, where they both played through the ball resulting in cleats on shin….and then both Jota & Udogie got sent off on very similarly moronic sliding tackles when already on a yellow, that left the ref no option but to show them a second.

Obviously not identical plays, but just stuck me as funny the similarities given how rare it is to go down to 9 men, and the manner in which we both found ourselves there.

Two of them didn't. I don't see how you could not see that as an issue. The goal is a grey area. I'm not super mad about the goal not being overturned in the game. I think it should have, but if the goal had counted and Bruno had seen red in the first half, I would have gone, fair enough. VAR fixed the clear and obvious error didn't feel there was enough clear evidence to overturn the goal. Fine. Once they didn't give Bruno a red, they lost any credibility. Once almost half of the panel looking it over didn't think Bruno should have gotten a red, they also lost any credibility. There are grey areas where people can see both sides like the goal and black and white areas like everything Bruno did in that match. I'm not really fond of either team involved, so I didn't go into that match with any real bias one way or another and what I saw was a ref who had zero control over the match and a VAR team that was, drunk? I don't know. The panel being a 3-2 split on Bruno is so clearly a problem. If that happens, you toss the panel out and find five new people, because the three that voted yes still don't deserve to be there for not immediately shouting the other two out of the room for being absolute idiots.

In more fun news, boy did Villa suck last weekend with a lifeless 2-0 loss to Forest. I have to give a little blame to Emery, and not just because he keeps trotting Zaniolo the turnover machine. We played the exact same lineup and tactics we have in recent games and those are based on exploiting teams that are looking to press and be aggressive and Forest were always going to just sit back and soak up pressure and we took far too long to adjust to that. Emi had a bad day too, but we never really threatened despite having the vast majority of the possession. I want to see Tielemans starting over Zaniolo in general, but especially in a match like this, where his passing and possession could have really helped unlock Forrest's defense a little. Digne also played well, but this was the kind of match where Moreno's ability to penetrate behind the back line probably would have been more valuable than Digne whipping crosses into a crowded box. We have a lot of transition nightmare players, but we're kind of lacking guys to deal with a compact solid defense. I really miss Buendia for a lot of reasons, but that's definitely a big one.

Edit: I just realized that they said it wasn't a foul because the player had already made an action for the ball?? That's absolutely insane and making me double down on the fact these people are morons.

Good result for my Reds today vs a stubborn Bees squad. Mo with two (15 straight home matches with a goal or assist) and Jota added the third. Happier with the clean sheet, though as they've been too few and far between thus far. And van Dyke looking back to his 2018-2020 form. And watched parts of both the West Ham/Forest and Villa/Fulham matches. For the Hammers, James Ward-Prowse is probably the best deliverer of corner kicks I've seen in the Prem in ... forever it seems. And Villa has become relentless in their pursuit of excellence. Clinical when needed but players put in the hard shifts, too.

That Chelsea/Man City match was something, wasn't it? Surprised that Chelsea didn't crack like they've repeatedly done the last couple of years in similar situations.

And now we head to 2 weeks off and then the frantic run to New Year’s Day. For the clubs playing in Europe, there are 10 or 11 matches between November 25 and January 1. For the others, it’s 9. Just crazy times and a test of squad depth. And then here comes the FA Cup the first weekend of January.

VDC has to be happy. Villa with a walk in the park 3-1 win over Fulham and Theilemans got the nod over his least favorite Italian on the left flank. Made some nice plays too.

Just beaming today. Tielemans had a real shout for man of the match as well and I'm pretty sure that's the end of me having to watch Zaniolo start for a while. This was the exact lineup and formation I've wanted to see for a while now and it didn't disappoint. Tielemans playing more advanced is such a better use of him than when he was subbing in at defensive midfielder and looking out of place. It would be nice to hold onto a clean sheet one of these days, but not much else to complain about from that one. That was some of the best possession based offense I've ever seen us play. We've had better games in the past for sure, but the passing and breakdown of an aggressive but disciplined defense was joyous. I'm also really glad that it was Tielemans starting over Bailey as I think most people wanted/expected since Bailey's role as an impact sub this season is perfect for him. Watkins and Diaby tire the defense out for sixty minutes and then Bailey gets to come in with fresh legs and terrorize them. He's also significantly more defensively active when he knows he only has to go for 30-40 minutes.

Remember, they're going to have to rotate for Europe so don't get too settled in. And it looks almost certain that Villa will advance out of groups. So, more Thursday/Sunday weeks to come.

Sure, but I expect it to be Zaniolo subbing in in the conference league and not the other way around. I have to believe/hope that Ramsey will be back at some point as well. Either way, I think Emery has seen enough to know that Zaniolo is not his first choice and that's the best I can ask for.

Bad morning for Spurs at the Molinieux. Leading 1-0 in the 90th minute and they surrender a pair in extra time to lose 2-1.

We were due one of these, can’t even count the number of bonkers wins we pulled off in similar fashion over the last handful of years….and in this instance I’m glad it happened to a team that honestly deserved to win.

No Udogie + Maddison to transition the ball out from the back is pure death for us….so having Udogie back next game should help some, (although we also lose Bissouma).

But we’re in for a real stretch of pain here given our next four matches against Villa, City, West Ham and Newcastle…..going to be very lucky to pull a single win out of those four, if that.

For the others, it’s 9. Just crazy times and a test of squad depth.

Particularly brutal timing for the Maddison & VDV injuries on this front for Tottenham…our most important offensive player, and the man who has made our high line as successful as it’s been.

Going to be a massive challenge for Spurs to remain afloat until any 🤞🏼 reserves can be added in the January window to hopefully help us out.

Rumblings we might be a little tight with cash given the ~£215m we spent in the off-season, but we desperately need CB depth and a creative midfielder who can properly spell Maddison.

Four minutes of people being bad at their job, got it. I really want to move on from this embarrassment, but every new piece of information makes them all seem worse. I was at least giving the benefit of the doubt that they just missed the hand ball, but it's worse, they saw it and don't know the rules of the game. The absolute moron said that it wasn't intentional which is NOT THE RULE. The rule is unnatural position and I'd like them to explain to me how two hands straight out in someone's back is a natural position. Also, it's a lesser issue, but they absolutely could have ruled it offsides as well since it was. They even told on themselves because the VAR official very clearly says "OK, so he's clearly off" when he first gets the frozen still looking for offsides, but the caption at the bottom reads "OK, so he's clearly on" which is just some absolute clown shit. AVAR talked him out of it with the BS that they can't know where the ball is, even though they've both agreed where the ball is right before that and if they move one frame forward, they can see the ball. Gordon's left foot is clearly in front of the ball. It's all just so bad.

I want the audio from earlier when they decided Guimaraes shouldn't get a red card, give me all of these incompetent buffoons who should find a new career.
