GDT: Canes v. Lightning 3/11 7:30

We are not trying to score on those PPs. Making sure we don't hammer a puck into shin pads or allow an odd man rush. 3 goal lead 3rd period approach

Not fan of these streamed games. I have decent internet, butt this game is going back and forth from hi-res to blurry lo-res. Picture quality is terrible. 780mbps just now.
I had to listen to the entire first period on the radio and I have to hand it to Mike and Tripp, they did a good job. I really, really, really, super wish that they would always call the game as if they do not have a TV feed. Mike was actually allowed to call the action and Tripp interjected only when it was necessary.

We ran into Tulsky on the upper concourse during the 2nd intermission. We told him that even from upstairs it looked like the boys were happier. He said the locker room was a lot happier after the deadline. So,t he whole thing wore on everyone.

The last 2 games? 7 goals against the 2 best goalies in the league. Not. Too. Shabby.

I wanted to ask him about the PP but I didn’t want to spoil the mood.

I was listening to Gold at lunch. Don’t judge. Since January 1, the Canes have 6 PP goals and 6 shorties. But…

The Canes are 6 for 81 on the PP, a 7.4% success rate.
The 6 shorties are on 75 times shorthanded, so they’ve scored on 8% of their penalty kills, a better rate than on the PP.

So they’re more likely to score on the PK than the PP.

The lesson here is we need to take more penalties

81 powerplays is 162 minutes. Take out 6 minutes for the ones we scored on that leaves roughly 156 minutes of powerplay time without scoring. So even strength we are way better than on the powerplay. If I was the other team I’d be sure to abuse our guys every time we have the lead.

Heck. If I’m Rod I’d just run my normal offense. It’s more effective than our PP. dump it in and forecheck.

I still think it’s time for a shakeup behind the bench. It’s not like we have a bunch of hacks skating around the ice. Plenty of talent and guys willing to go to the dirty areas. Comes down to coaching to me. Time to let Daniels go and bring in some fresh concepts

I don't know about that. The Hurricanes have given up only, what, 2 or 3 shorties this season?
The Canes have allowed 3 shorties, only Ottawa and Winnipeg have allowed fewer. The shorty that Jarvis scored last night was the 10th allowed by Tampa, tied with the Bruins for last.

Right. Score some goals then keep us on the powerplay.
LOL. There you go. If you're the other team and you're up a goal or two with only about 6 or 7 minutes left in the game, then beat the shit out of us. Sure, the opponent ain't getting any short handed goals on the Hurricanes, but our guys are, in essence, just killing the clock.

Hack-a-Shaq hockey version

That always seems like a good idea but it’s probably hard to run a “normal” offense when the other team is definitely not running a normal defense.
