1st Rnd '25 Playoffs: The Battle of Ontario V - More of the Same - LFG!

Didn't like our game too much tbh. Yeah we played to the score but we still should've been better. I think the big 4 would need to be a whole lot better at 5v5 against a contender. Especially line 1. I also think that stolarz clearly has playoffs nerves. I hope he settles down quick but i wouldn't object at all to Woll going in next game.

And yeah the refs were definitely one sided.

On the flipside, i really liked how the entire bottom 6 looked (no matter which of holmberg or domi was in the bottom 6 at the time). And even if they didn't play well, seeing the big 4 score with ease is such a fucking relief.

This was the only call I questioned. Tanev turned into it right before the hit was coming. Could have been a non-call and I wouldn’t have been pissed about it.

Yeah, it wasn't egregious or anything, but Tanev's shoulders were already turned to the boards before his lower half did and the puck was already gone (Tanev never actually played it) before Stutzle engaged. It was the right call imo and the only reason to not call it would have been "Boys will be boys, something something playoff hockey".

The tanev and matthews ones didnt need to be called imo.

It was a complete departure from previous years where the top 6 would dominate the puck at 5v5 and generate our only offence, the PP would go missing, we'd maybe get the saves we needed but also maybe not, and the bottom 6 would get caved in all night.

Meh, both were penalties. The only reason to not call them is because you're "letting them play" or whatever other bullshit. The Matthews one specifically, Matthews had already won a body position battle with Gaudette to win the puck and after losing position on the puck to Matthews he tries to push him into the boards.

Both arms full extension on a player not in a position to defend themselves is going to get called more often than not.

Loved that at no point did they collapse into the patented terrified Sheldon Keefe defensive shell.
Our team has spent many, many years being defensive in terms of who's on the ice (This happened a lot with Babs as well). It's always about what the other team is doing.

pretty ideal start. great to see the sens coming unraveled and losing their shit so easily.

shout out to Linus Lalime for failing to make the big save. conversely, man Stolarz looked good.

Laughton played a hell of a game. Looked like a totally different player.

He's been steadily improving for the past little while i think.

Getting Kampf out of the lineup might unintentionally have justified his trade price.

the line changes stick in practice - Domi centering the 3rd line, Holmberg on the 2nd line.

Despite the criticism they got this year, the Holmberg-Tavares-Nylander combo has been a good one - 65.4xgf%, 68.2gf%. Tavares-Nylander don't need a super skill guy beside them.

McMann-Domi-Robertson was a very good combo when they started together but kinda fell off the pace eventually. They ended up all the way down at a 44.3xgf%, though still managed to keep a very good 58.8gf%.

Another option would be to swap McMann and Holmberg. McMann worked very well on the 2nd line too.

Tavares/Nylander combos:

w/Patches: 179min, 45.3xgf%, 59.2gf%
w/McMann: 158min, 60.9xgf%, 69.3gf%
w/Holmberg: 120min, 65.4xgf%, 68.2gf%

w/Domi: 58min, 38.0xgf%, 100.0gf%
w/Knies: 58min, 54.0xgf%, 49.4gf%
w/Marner: 43min, 50.0xgf%, 76.2gf%
w/Jarnkrok: 38min, 38.5xgf%, 33.3gf%

Domi/Robertson combos:

w/McMann: 219min, 44.3xgf%, 58.8gf%
w/Holmberg: 26min, 44.0xgf%, 51.3gf%
w/Laughton: 20min, 63.8xgf%, 49.5gf%
w/Patches: 18min, 22.0xgf%, 00.0gf%
w/Nylander: 17min, 47.0xgf%, 00.0gf%
w/Lorentz: 15min, 57.4xgf%, 62.4gf%
w/Minten: 15min, 31.8xgf%, 00.0gf%
w/Knies: 13min, 54.2xgf%, 76.7gf%

Either McMann or Holmberg seems to work very well with Tavares/Nylander.

no great results for the 3rd line aside from Laughton and Lorentz, who are now together on what looks like a keeper checking line. But with McMann the combo was really good for a while and even when they went sour nerdiewise they still were good goalswise.

But of course the McMann-Holmberg-Robertson was pretty dynamite too - 71min, 66.1xgf%, 67.9gf%.

So the issue does seem to be Domi. But I still want Domi in instead of Kampf or Patches.

Just cuz it's my duty:

Knies-Matthews-Marner: 11:24, 28.2xgf% (-2.36), 100.0gf% (+5.21)

Domi-Tavares-Nylander: 6:48, 4.4xgf% (-3.70), 50.0gf% (+0.00)
Holmberg-Tavares-Nylander: 3:06, 75.0xgf% (+2.71), 50.0gf% (+0.00)

McMann-Holmberg-Robertson: 4:18, 14.3xgf% (-0.70), 50.0gf% (+0.00)
McMann-Domi-Robertson: 3:42, 63.6xgf% (+0.51), 100.0gf% (+16.05)

Lorentz-Laughton-Jarnkrok: 8:48, 55.0xgf% (+0.82), 48.2gf% (-0.47)

McCabe-Tanev: 15:30, 19.6xgf% (-2.16), 100.0gf% (+3.83)

Rielly-Carlo: 13:54, 3.3xgf% (-3.63), 49.5gf% (-0.09)

Benoit-OEL: 12:54, 57.8xgf% (+1.07), 50.0gf% (+0.00)

So yeah, stick with the changed version of the 2nd and 3rd lines.

And hope the 1st line can be better.
