OT: American Politics

I don’t even think the quid pro quo of the jet is the biggest issue.

How the hell can you put the president on a plane that was bought/built by a foreign, terrorist funding state. They won’t even let people buy Huwawei phones.

That’s a major national security risk. They could put anything on the plane, including back doors into the software.
it's a shitshow and embarrassment from every angle - national security, emoluments, etc.

the focus should be on democracy crumbling before our eyes.

I understand that. And I think that point is being made by real journalists (not Fox, not right wing blogosphere)

It’s not like forum ice found that focus due to our access to an underground cabal of fearless journalists.

The problem is that half the country does not care about democracy unless it impacts them directly.

When Trump said this:
"I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody, and I wouldn't lose any voters, OK? It's, like, incredible."

He was sadly prescient.

Yeah, I think you guys ultimately agree here though - it's the 97 penalties and impossible to call 'em all (give them the amount of attention one big scandal would get)

I agree, I'm just talking about this ongoing need of some journalists to keep talking to everyone not focusing on their preferred story of the moment as if they're idiots for not doing so. Trump isn't playing us, he's just being Trump and no one knows which stories are going to stick and which aren't.

Agree. Trump is like a golden child who throws a tantrum every 10 mins because they know they will never get punished

Once my algo turned nazi and Maga and I got into the heads of where they are coming from, I quickly understood this. People can write whatever they want, trump can do whatever he wants. The bulk of his followers will simply not change their mind and you can see this in the data too. His support levels have a clear floor.

My parents went to a funeral in the states last weekend and there were people there mid fucking funeral who you wouldn't ever consider radical or alt right (in the past) that were talking about how great of a job trump is doing and that he's going to fix America. He has captured a good 40% of the country in a way that allows him to pretty much do anything he wants. It would be impressive if it wasn't so horrifying.

I am going to criticize any outlet that has a story on a Summer 2023 fundraiser as their main story and threats to suspend Habeas Corpus in "Today's Mix" below. The focus there is on the wrong thing.

Most of them (not all) will care when it's gone tho.

So it's definitely our job to make it crystal clear how exactly it's being lost in real time.

That’s the problem. The people we’re talking about are focused on the here and now, and lack the basic capacity to figure out what’s at stake for them at a future date

not nearly enough of them. especially the ones at NYT, WaPo, LA Times, etc.

I'd be interested to see what percentage of tweets and links and articles come from MSM vs more independent outlets.
