2024-25 NHL Misc. Thread

Dallas signed Matt Duchene to a 4 year/$18 million extension. It has a NMC for the first 2 years and a 5 team trade list in the last 2.

That leaves Dallas with less than $500k in cap space and a host of players on expiring contracts…Benn, Dadonov, Granlund, Ceci, Bourque. They need to do some trimming.

To keep our string of knocking him out of the playoffs every year, we'd have to make the SCF this time (along with Smashville making it) and win the Cup, or have Covid lockdowns again change the division lineup and schedule. I know which one I'd prefer.
I'm down with that. Let's go kick Nashville's fake country arses in the Finals.

Sens sign RFA to be Fabian Zetterlund to a 3 year/$4.275 AAV extension. The deal covers 1 UFA season. He had 19 goals, 22 assists between the Sharks and Sens. He had 24 goals last season, his first full NHL season.
Good business for Ottawa I think. You'd feel a bit better about that deal if Zetterlund had posted a bit more of a track record as a point producer, but the money isn't wildly out of line and the fact that he clawed his way to a productive role while playing in that cesspool in San Jose speaks pretty loudly.

The Blackhawks signed forward Ryan Donato to a 4 year/$16 million extension. He doubled the term and money from his last contract. His 31 goals tied his career high for points and he added 31 assists.
Unlikely that Donato shoots 17% again on a career average of 11%, but they have to keep some of the current group for continuity. Donato was literally the only forward aside from Bedard to do much damage on offense last season in Chicago. They kind of had to get him extended.

They even take cheap shots on inanimate objects

Wally Tatomir dented the Cup the year Carolina won it IIRC. Given the volume of druken celebrations around that trophy, it's no wonder that thing's still legible.

Not going to miss seeing Erik Haula's damn ass as much either. it sure would be nice to knock him out of the playoffs again, just to say we did it.
{Polar's word} that guy...Excremento Muy Grande!

Forgot to mention ... with Duchene signing an extension in Dallas, they have basically no Cap space remaining (less than half a million currently). Remember, they HAVE to get Harley extended next summer and basically have no third line whatsoever as things stand now. That obviously isn't tenable so those rumors about them being willing to part with Robertson for a good enough stash of futures is starting to sound really, really plausible.

I am a huge fan of Robertson, so everyone needs to stop playing with my hockey fan heart.
Note that I did NOT say he was headed here, but Carolina DOES have the quantity and quality of assets to at least make an attractive offer if Dallas doesn't do something stupid like drag it out and reduce the market. Forgetting Cmon's joke offer, Carolina could easily part with Dallas' draft capital from the Rantanen deal and throw in a decent prospect without hurting their long term position. Dallas would essentially be trading Stankoven and Robertson for Rantanen, which seems like the kind of thing a GM could spin as a fair deal.

And at least Robertson is one guy who won't automatically be tied in the rumor mill to Toronto. They've screwed over his brother for the entire length of his pro career so they ain't no way he wants to go there.

Glad this series is finally over. As a Panther hater, I can still appreciate the incredible team they've built for playoff hockey. The WSJ has a good article, "The NHL's Preeminent Dirtbags Are Now Stanley Cup Champions," and talks about how they ramp up their antics for the playoffs and take pride at getting under other teams' skins. All true. They also play a suffocating defensive style which is similar to ours, but better. I can't help but think their silver bullet is in net - and keeps them in games when it matters most. Now we can finally think about the off-season!
Great points! I also think the NHL enables the Panthers to play that style a bit more than the rules dictate but screw the rulebook I guess. That is the part that pisses me off.

Dallas freed up some space, trading Mason Marchment to the Kraken for a 2025 4th rounder and a 2026 3rd rounder. He has 1 season left at a $4.5 million AAV. Shedding that contract offsets the first year of Duchene’s contract. They have just under $5 million of cap space.

Yeah, $4.95 mil in space and 8 forwards under contract for next season. Even if they just plugged ELC guys in the remaining 4 or 5 slots, it's not enough. And they are still talking about wanting to bring Benn back. Apparently they're thinking about buying out both Dumba and Lyubushkin, but they'd just have to replace them with similarly cheap options on D. All of which basically brings back the same team except they'd be replacing Marchment with ... somebody.

Dallas still seems like a shakeup waiting to happen.

They should be fine. They have the best GM in the league, remember?

Umm ... OK. The incentives make sense as a concept, but in practice those bars are pretty low and there's no adjustment for usage. If he ends up playing 4th line minutes and PP time and maxes out the contract then that's a LOT of money for a situational player.
