It was a fun run of being elite or borderline elite. It was always gonna eventually end, and no I don't think marner addresses their largest weaknesses. We've been harping at the d corps weaknesses for several years and all tre has done was add d that add to those weaknesses. He completely botched this roster. And yeah to lofs point, Matthews went from being a generational stud to just a really really good, elite 1c. Which sucks too.

The roster is mostly good. Now that Robertson is being allowed to play, he provides a legit top 6 weapon. McMann is sort of proving he can’t be counted on consistently for that role, but he’s a great third liner. Roy is solid. Lorentz can play, though he hasn’t been as good this year so far. And even Joshua shows he can hang in a bottom six role (he’s good with Roy).
But Domi is a total disaster. Maccelli is empty calories. Laughton is completely fucking useless. Jarn does nothing but provide some energy and speed, which is ok but just more fluff.
They have Cowan and yet they are playing these slugs. They’ve moved off of ruining Robbie to now denying Cowan. A goon like Berube just doesn’t know better until injuries force him to play Cowan, Cowan produces as we all know he can, and then stays in. But this is probably only after two years of bullshit dropping him in and out of the lineup, up and down from the Marlies. But you could plug him in right now and take one of the other bums out and be instantly better. Never happening while the goon is in charge.
And then the D is disastrous. Myers and Benoit are #7 guys. Carlo is a third pairing guy, if that - his D is average at best and his offense is nonexistent. How did this guy get to where he is? Rielly is weak defensively, OEL isn’t any kind of stopper, and so you have 4 or 5 out of 6 guys who can’t play proper defense. Of course we have gong shows like the last couple games with that corps.
And Matthews is wearing the elite tag only because of past accomplishments. He is doing exactly zero of what he used to do when he dominated. Willy and Knies are dragging him along and he still can even break PPG. I honestly don’t even really care about the points primarily. He’s just not anywhere near as dominant as he used to be, and this whole era might just be treading water and burning years off contracts so long as he stays like this.

Too many frustrating issues to list. But when things aren't going well it becomes easy to exaggerate some of them. I just think Tre's rebuilt d corps and acquiring only bottom 6 forwards (for prime assets) are the main issue. He was close with the d too, and the final piece being Carlo vs some 2 way stud is the difference between me shitting on him and praising him.
So many assets wasted on complete nothingness and liabilities. That's killer. You can't recover from that.

Yep. Paying up for slightly above replacement level talent is not the way to go, but I almost get it when the whole world is telling you “you came so, so, so close” year after year after your team gets bounced by the eventual Cup champs
Crazy how nowadays you can recover from
AIDS but not trading two firsts for Laughton and Carlo.

Domi and Benoit were both real good in the playoffs but are hot garbage now. Benoit basically has that playoff run of being good to save him. He's was really bad all last (Regular) season.
