The Official Post-Bitch 2025-26 Regular Season Thread

That's why Leafs should have fired Berube today (even though he'll get canned eventually)

There is no world where Berube pulls a Marty St Louis and tells Chayka "I know you're down on Morgan Reilly but look at these numbers -- he's doing exactly what we asked him to do since the start of the season"

Nobody is saying it should be

I haven't been involved in that convo this morning, but I'd go as far as saying that no decisions should be made that aren't supported by "data". You can do things like betting on a bounceback after a bad season, but then you better have data from prior seasons that you're expecting/hoping for regression to. To sum it up, you shouldn't do everything the data tells you to, but you definitely shouldn't do anything the data tells you not to.

data can conflict tho....and you can prioritize different metrics...so again, there is no magic number

but to your point, a lot of decisions can be filtered out rather easily but that should be numbers 101...you're hoping Chayka can do more than that

Disagree. A lot went wrong last year. Boobay was a big part of it but not the only part.

New mgmt absolutely should debrief with him and get his take. You miss a big opportunity if you kick him to the curb.

That's kind of my point though. If you can't make an analytically backed argument for your position on a specific hockey move, it's almost definitely a bad hockey move.

I assume they got his take last night...and, if I'm Chayka, I'm moving past last year and asking myself one question: is Berube the best candidate moving forward with our new data driven approach

Montreal has a coach that asks his analytics team for new metrics (which is the entire point of paying a team rather than following JFresh)

You need a coach that is equally as curious about ways to make his team better

It's amazing to me that Leafs even allowed Simmons to ask a question, no less the second or third one, at this presser. What did they think he was going to ask about? It's really amateur hour at MLSE/Pelleyland, isn't it?

Yup, the absolute core competency necessary isn't data analysis, it's curiousity and a commitment to learning. Not believing that hockey was perfected 30-50 years ago and that you know all there is to know about managing high level competition.

Our organization fell out of love with that 5-6 years ago.

Steve Simmons' question wasn't even a question. He just told Pelley that everyone he spoke to thinks Chayka is a liar and a fraud. What is he supposed to say to that? It was funny, but at least ask a god damn question. If you hate Chayka so much, challenge him and get him to diagnose the roster.
Pathetic performance from SS

How the fuck do you even make that comment , should have been kicked out

All he had to say is , " hockey world is surprised how do you plan to help the team "

Dangle is a clown too. Congrats on turning baby tantrums into a full time career and all, but I'm not sure if I've ever heard smart analysis from him in like 10 years now.

Wyshynski is right here. Our media is as stupid as it is corrosive.

I’m down for hating on the Toronto sports media in general and Steve Simmons in specific. But this is not an apples to apples comparison.

Mehta, before being hired by the Devils, was a current, hugely successful and well-regarded NHL executive & person.

Whereas Chayka is a Wendy’s franchisee who was last seen in the NHL over five years ago, where aside from being a shit GM for a basement-dwelling team was mostly notable for being a greasy shit off the ice and being sanctioned by the league multiple times.

To paint the difference in media reception between the two as just a “Toronto-be-crazy” thing is disingenuous as hell.
