The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

Age is important but i don't buy that chl 'experience' is.

Mckenna is 2 weeks off from being a year younger, so it's always a tough comp.

He'll be one of the oldest from his draft class but probably the very youngest from his age year.

but yeah i was gonna add in the age year comp today too!

So yeah here's the comp of McKenna's D-1 compared to the other guys' draft years. Basically this turns mckenna from one of the older guys in the comp into the very youngest....in some cases younger by almost a year (mcdavid 11 months) or even over a year (Kane 13 months).

So this is what scouts would be looking at if McKenna had just completely sat out his draft year, up against players that were mostly close to a year older than him:

(and yes, quebec league stats should be devalued)

#1 S.Crosby* 75gms, 80gls, 199pts (88gl/218pt pace) --- 4 months older

Makes sense, he'll end up halfway between McDavid/Kane and Lafreniere/Drouin, that seems like a reasonable range to expect.

post-draft year production for those top-5 there:

Crosby (NHL): 81gms, 39gls, 102pts (40gl/103pt pace)
Bedard (NHL): 68gms, 22gls, 61pts (27gl/74pt pace)
McDavid (NHL): 45gms, 16gls, 48pts (29gl/88pt pace)
Kane (NHL): 82gms, 21gls, 72pts (21gl/72pt pace)
McKenna ---

their best possible linemates, at least.....

Crosby: Recchi 37, Leclair 36, Palffy 33
Bedard: Kurashev 23, Foligno 35, Johnson 33
McDavid: Hall 23, Eberle 25, (Draisaitl 19 - but prob playing C)
Kane: Toews 19, Sharp 25, Lang 35

- Funny how the broad opinions of Berube ending up tracking with what we were obviously seeing from the players all season and not with our media takes at all with almost all of them "expecting him to return" or some such bullshit. They know nothing

- The "Chayka is just a Pelley/Rogers puppet" and "Rogers is tightening the belt" narratives can officially be taken off of life support

- How much ya wanna bet Pridham is going to Pittsburgh?

- Jake Goldberg would be an awesome hire. I know nothing about him aside from his last name, but I can safely assume that he has a law degree and is good with money.

We can all agree the Berube stuff was fucking ridiculous. It was the contigent of Leaf hating "reporters" tasked with covering the team they hate stoking the fires. I'm glad Chayka/Sundin had the sense to stomp it out pretty quickly, along with the puppet speculation.

I also wonder if Pridham was one of the main sources of the internal leaks.

Correct.

Yeah all the silly hullabaloo was really about an attempt to show the leafs as desperate, irrational, and a meddling prez looking for a puppet.

When the actual truth was always easy to see and always made perfect sense....

- any mistake Pelley made was in deferring to inherited league-respected management, the opposite of meddling.
- both the GM and Coach clearly deserved to be fired on merit. There should have been no hint of incompetence around their firings - they had no business being here in the first place. The only justified criticism would have been if Pelley DIDN'T 'meddle' (i.e. do his only hockey related job and fire/hire the GM).
- they clearly did a lengthy search, and Chayka is a reasonable candidate. There was nothing in his performance in arizona that was even clearly 'bad', let alone bad enough to never get another chance. He did plenty of good things in a tough situation.
- hiring Mats as advisor is all awesome. So nothing wrong there.
- leaving the coaching decision fully within the GM's hands, and not meddling, not only is the only right way to do it, but goes along with literally everything pelley has said since the day he was hired and throughout the process.
- hearing Berube out and not firing him sight unseen was obviously the proper professional way to do things, both for respect reaspns and for learning about the team he has.
- literally every timeline in this process has been pretty much perfect - long enough for a proper process to be followed and quickly enough to demonstrate an organized efficient search. And the coaching timeline is included there.

All this silliness because this market was either too stupid or too cowardly to simply point out that Brad and Berube were incompetent. That simple observation would have made every move make perfect sense. But cuz they couldn't besmirch their gudpro old guys, they had to try and savage the president just doing the proper job, and then savage his hire as the worst most evil GM to ever live.
