The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

Oh i heard they were planning to do stupid things in FA and might trade their top 10 pick for help

I think they need playoffs or people lose jobs

There are few things I pay attention to less than the plans of shit teams in the western conference. You might be spot on there, I don't know.

Ive heard alot about Seattle and Columbus having alot of cap room and wanting to make big splashes to propel themselves.

Sharks too, but that one made sense

Barry Trotz in an interview from today

“When my phone went off this morning with the news, I was caught off guard,” Barry Trotz told NHL.com late Wednesday afternoon. “But, really, the more I thought about it, I wasn’t really caught off guard.”

Indeed, the more Trotz thought about the hiring that shocked a lot of people, the more it made sense to him.

Trotz, an adviser with the Nashville Predators, was coach of the New York Islanders when Hiller was one of his assistants from 2019-2022. In that time, Trotz experienced many of the traits that he thinks will serve Hiller well in Toronto.

“He’s a progressive thinker, a bit more into analytics, a good power-play coach,” Trotz said. “And he’s a good communicator with an outstanding ability to connect with players, which is such a key to coaching these days.

“Late in the day we as a staff would have regular hot stove sessions about the entire League. He wasn’t afraid to bring things up and look at things in a different direction. Like I said, progressive thinker.”

Friedman sounds like he's being pretty definitive there.

I'm a bit nervous about signing a late-bloomer immediately after his breakout season at 30 years of age. But hopefully he's not a one-year wonder, and if he isn't that's a pretty big addition to the defense.

Of course, it'll also be important what the salary, term & acquisition cost ends up being here. Not really sure what the price would be for getting a 12-day jump on the UFA market for Raddysh. Maybe the extra 3rd rounder we just picked up from Philly? And because they're going to the trouble of doing a sign & trade instead of waiting another 12 days, I wonder if they're going max term to keep his cap hit down?

This guy means business.

Guessing 5-6 years between $7m-$8m. Great if it’s a bargain and not really concerned if we overpay a bit outside of that range.

Acquisition cost will be interesting. Just a 3rd would be nice. Maybe foist Maccelli and his contract negotiation and get a mid round pick from them instead? Then again it looks like they’re bone dry on picks and maybe that 3rd would do it.
