Man, you're really looking to add some long bois to our forward group, eh? 12 feet and 9 inches worth of Marchment & Tuch.
Have to say though, neither of those guys excite me much as our big additions up front. Florida just added an impact player in his 20's who's going to be there and in his prime for a while. I want to see something imaginative and ambitious like that, rather than just overpaying two guys on the wrong side of 30 who happen to be two of the bigger fish in an extremely shallow UFA pool.
And Hayton would be ok...just OK.
They only made the earlier trade to do this trade. They obviously had a specific target here, and as long as you have them on the hook, you can be sure they wouldn’t blow their wad on any other player if Brady was in play. What if they traded for Larkin, or Hellebuyck instead? Then there's no offer at all, nevermind a good one. They were clearly looking to add. They traded Samoskevich to add picks so that they had surplus to spend on another good player. They were shopping, and now is the time for that.
When time is not on your side, don't tempt fate. This is how you end up giving Mitch Marner away for Nic Roy.
I’m disappointed we haven’t really seen anything on the Hirvonen and Niemela fronts. Feels like they’re out of the picture.Another guy who may come into play is hirvonen. He stayed healthy and had a solid year back in Finland.
He’s not necessarily better value than the 9th. But I was saying him instead of those two ‘29 and ‘30 picks. They had a target, but if Ottawa fucked around on the Brady trade Florida would have done a deal for someone else. They weren't going to be left standing with their dick in their hands.
But the important thing here is that Ottawa got good value for him. It's really that simple. I don't see why Lundell is a more valuable piece than the 9th overall. You weren't getting both for Brady, and if I could choose one of the two, I take the 9th in this draft.

Fwiw...if you're a nerdies guy, Tuch is every bit as good as Tkachuk and I'm prone to agree with it.
Also fwiw, I'm not convinced that Lundell is actually better than the good version of Hayton.
Again, I'm sure Tuch is a perfectly lovely player.
But can't the burger boy brainiac come up with something more clever than overpaying a 30-year old UFA?
And again, Hayton's a perfectly OK player. But we'd still be left relying on Tavares in the 2C slot for the foreseeable future.
2yr avg of 5v5 p1/60 and p/60
Matthews 29 1.97 --- Barkov 31 1.83
Nylander 30 2.16 --- Tkachuk 29 2.05
Knies 24 1.76 --- Tkachuk 27 1.63
Tavares 36 1.90 --- Bennett 30 1.76
Tuch 30 2.05 --- Reinhart 31 1.52
McKenna 19 billions --- Marchand 38 1.82
Hayton 26 1.07 --- Lundell 25 1.61
Marchment 31 1.98 --- Verhaeghe 31 1.68
Cowan 21 1.30 --- Luostarinen 28 1.18
The fact that they couldn't pry Lundell loose and had to settle for picks in 2029 and 2030 instead is actually laughable.
They could well have told Florida to sit tight for another two years then, or just pony up a good roster player.
Don't like it? Stop giving them those deals. The next CBA needs to address these players signing long term deal with no trade clauses and then demanding to be traded. This is an absolute unfair advantage the player holds over the team.
There should be an automatic clause in these contracts that a player must file with the league to demand a trade while in a contract and when that happens the no trade clause is rendered void.
Go watch an Ethan Belchetz highlight reel and try not to fondle yourself.
