so, so many things went way wrong last year, actually.

All these guys from the projected opening day roster completely flopped and gave us negative value in the little time they played....

While Berrios and Hoffman and Little were pretty much replacement level by the end.

And Varsho missed more than half the year.

Every year you expect some regressions. The bullpen was hit a little hard last year, sure, but having a random starter crash and burn, a few bench bats disappoint, whatever. Santander hurts because they gave him money, and even when he was on the field he sucked.

This year has gone beyond though. Basically getting 0 up and down the lineup, even the guys you count on.
 
It's insane as a year over year thing. Like if this happened three years after the insane WS run, then okay. Just a handful of months later and carrying on through the whole season, and Vladdy turning to shit as part of it, is unfathomable.

Not sure there was even one actual "career year" on the team tbh.

A couple of them had seasons that were arguably but not clearly their best.
 
They're a good team. This is like last season's Leafs, minus the terrible TreBiff situation upstairs.

Unless Vladdy is actually finished, in which case, forget about it.

Kinda.

The sticks last year were pretty fortunate. Springer had 4 years of gradual decline before having maybe the best season of his career at 35, and then right back to his decline again this season. Kirk had 2 straights seasons of being a slightly below average hitter, spiked to 16% above average last year. Varsho was average or below the 2 season before last year, and a partial season power surge had him 23% above average and this season he's back within the range from the previous 2 seasons. Bo had his best season by a little bit. Schneider a pretty crazy impactful platoon bat when he was unplayable the season before (and the season since).

It's more than the sticks though. The defence has been good this season but just good and a solid step away from the elite it was last year.

As for next year, the only real approach here is to retool imo. There's a good argument for "run it back" but with some changes.

- Springer is cooked, get the man a place in the level of excellence but let's move on and get another banger for DH.
- I would trade Gausman at the deadline, but would still try to bring him back. Add another solid starter (preferably by trade, the FA market is looking grim) and Cease-Trey-Gausman-XXXXX-Ponce is solid if Ponce manages to not kill himself between now and the start of next season.
- SS upgrade should be on the menu. Honestly, so should CF.
- A corner OF stick would be nice as well. Wouldn't mind seeing if Okamoto can recruit Seiya Suzuki to the cause.

Kind of unlucky and unexpected for the rest of the team to bust out like this, other than maybe Springer.
 
Barger out for the season, Vladdy turned to mush, Ponce done for the year after five pitches.

Just those three unlikely and impossible to predict events tanked us, without even getting to the Springer and Kirk injuries, the Santander situation, and so on.

It's insanely unlucky stuff that I can't hold anyone in management accountable for.

If you count the deadline last year, yeah their recent additions have been mostly good. Varland has turned into an incredible reliever, Okamoto has been a good starting 3B with some bat to ball issues that he can probably improve on going forward, and Cease has been Cy Young worthy.

Bieber really the only major laid egg but even then Stephen blew out his elbow this year and was only goodish in AA before he did, so that might end up as a meh.
 
Sure sucks balls when your team sucks and you can't even blame management. Sports fans need someone to blame at all times, but this just seems like a bizarre, unlucky set of circumstances more than anything.
 
The Vladdy thing alone is baffling. If he's injured, why are they playing him? If he's not injured, what the fuck happened to him? They were saying at the start of the season that having such a long prior season and then playing in that world classic tournie at the start of the season was just too much baseball and wore him out. Hard to buy it all that much, but I wish we'd know how he'd look right now if he skipped that tournie.
