Not surprising. The Canes only made the playoffs four times when he was a player. They haven't missed the playoffs with him as a coach, despite going literally winless in Conference Finals games.

That was Craig Kowalski's job back in '06, IIRC. His Wikipedia page states "He was spare Goaltenders of Carolina during the playoffs."
