Leafs' Prospect/Marlies Discussion Thread!

Our player development is probably best in the world, if not, top tier. Until someone spends 3 years in the program, can’t use any historical data etc to see what our prospects will translate to that Dubas drafted. We can up different skills, IQ, etc etc that our past GMs just didn’t do. So until Dubas loses my trust - I’ll just assume everyone dragged and developed by him has a chance to be used as a trade chip or make the team in some capacity

There are about 6-7 teams in the NHL with a data driven process. The rest of the league has neanderthal apes as management. It's pretty funny to watch, especially when those 6-7 teams are consistently the best in the league. What a stupid, shitty league.

I'm at least mildly surprised with how persistent the culture is though. When the NBA went through it's analytics revolution there was resistence at first but as soon as the Steph Curry era blew the doors off of any remaining questions about the dominance of that style of play, there was a rush for every team in the league to follow.

I know that hockey has far more luck involved (across individual games and seasons) than Basketball so maybe there are more excuses for not following successful short term trends, but when there are no data driven teams at the bottom of the league and the biggest proponents of the approach are at the top of the league (and look to be able to remain there reliably for some time to come). When does the dam burst?

If anything threatens to ruin Gary's parity, it's this. When half of the teams in the league are using data driven processes to build, manage, and utilize their teams and the other half just fucking isn't.

Bingo. The media and the old boys club create their own narratives for why data driven teams fail to win a cup. And even when they do eventually win, it's because they abandoned analytics and got some fourth line grinder with character.

But eventually the dam will break. For now I'm enjoying this advantage that teams like the leafs have.

We're doing something really right in our scouting when a 21 yr old 6th round pick is one of the best defenders in Liiga and an undrafted 21 yr old pops 8 points in his first 9 AHL games.

Yep. Good year for a bunch of our guys drafted beyond the first round.

59th 2020 Hirvonen - WJCs Finland
64th 2020 Niemela - WJCs Finland
106th 2020 Akhtyamov - WJCs Russia

Like Tampa last year. I sure don't hear nearly as much talk about Kucherov & Point both scoring at 110+ point paces and Vasilevskiy sporting a .927 SV% through their playoff run as I do about them trading a pair of 1sts for Coleman & Goodrow.
