Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

At this point the right play is to let Tavares walk unless the deal is very team friendly and find a new home for Mo.

Even if someone has as generous an opinion of Mo's struggles as I have, that we play a bullshit grittensity style where his puck moving strengths are buried and weaknesses polished to be put on display, we're stuck with this Berube bullshit for at least another season after this and Mo isn't getting any younger. His kid isn't school aged yet, and his wife likes big city life. He would waive to go to any good market.

I'll be as happy as anyone here to see him gone, but he's still a good #2 centre this season. If he's willing to be properly team friendly, I don't hate the idea of bringing him back...provided that he doesn't suck in the playoffs again. If he's invisible in the playoffs again, yeah, just go.

When I say properly team friendly, I look at Kopitar's 2 x 7 (while being better than Tavares) signed last summer as my guidepost and even then, as I said, I'm only interested if he's good this year in the playoffs. For all of the shit the rest of the 4 have taken, they've all had stretches of playoff success, they've all had series performances that were strong...except for John.

If he plays at a 50 point pace in the playoffs again he can walk.

Yeah, unless Tavares was willing to sign for an extremely team-friendly, bargain contract—I don’t see any benefit to re-signing him prior to the end of this season’s playoff run.

Same goes for Mitch too, at this point.

If either or both has a beastly playoff performance that goes to—at minimum—the sixth or seventh game of the third round, then fine. Re-sign them. If not, let them both walk.

And I’m honestly in the same place with Mo now too. Unless he has a classic playoff Rielly performance throughout a deep run—it’s time to try and move on from him and at least try to get him to waive his NMC and move on.

sure, let them walk, but what are you replacing them with?

Marner is obviously way harder to replace and I lean towards just paying him short of him having a dog shit for the ages type playoff performance. Even if you pay him to trade him later. No NMC's, just modified NTC's so he can be moved in the future.

Tavares though...easy enough to replace. He's been better this season but combined between this season and last, he's somewhere in the 45-50th most productive centre in the NHL at 5v5 and at his age, there's no guarantee he stays a centre for much longer and we're not looking for a replacement anyway. At this time last year he sure didn't look like much of one anymore. #2C's are available in free agency and trade every summer.
