1st Rnd '25 Playoffs: The Battle of Ontario V - More of the Same - LFG!

Mad max came through for Toronto with a big goal. Sweet redemption for a bad game on defense with sloppy giveaways/turnovers. What an interception/read/pass by Benoit though. His playmaking and patience was key on the domi goal. He kinda looks like Tyler bertuzzi doesn’t he?

I thought that Everyone played well aside from Robertson and domi. Special props to Nylander, Marner, Tavares, and especially Stolarz who were excellent against Ottawa so far.

Power play has been on fire in this series.

He made a few plays in the offensive zone trying to go easy-west with passes that surprised me this game.

Like the coaches were waiting on to surprise everyone by only activating the D to do anything creative until now.

Low event sludge but hey at least this time we won the low events!

Shit second, but dominant 1st, 3rd and OT

Amazing how the media keeps pushing the narrative that the Sens should be happy about how they have played and look forward to coming games.

What is there to feel good about? You have to win four out of the next five games and just gave up your single chance to even up a series losing in OT on the road against the higher seed.

If anything they should feel devastated.

Current Lines:

Knies-Matthews-Marner: 26:00, 52.4xgf%, +0.11xgf
Lorentz-Laughton-Jarnkrok: 17:00, 54.5xgf%, +0.11xgf
Holmberg-Tavares-Nylander: 15:18, 57.0xgf%, +0.16xgf
McMann-Domi-Robertson: 10:30, 57.6xgf%, +0.05xgf

Old Lines:

Domi-Tavares-Nylander: 7:18, 8.3xgf%, -0.40xgf
McMann-Holmberg-Robertson: 4:18, 14.3xgf%, -0.05xgf

Odd Lines:

Knies-Laughton-Jarnkrok: 2:06, 0.0xgf%, -0.08xgf
McMann-Domi-Nylander: 1:54, 33.3xgf%, -0.01xgf
Knies-Tavares-Marner: 1:06, 0.0xgf%, -0.07
McMann-Tavares-Nylander: 0:54, 0.0xgf%, -0.02xgf
Knies-Tavares-Nylander: 0:54, 0.0xgf%, -0.34xgf

and then if I add up the other 70 or so other odd-line combos it comes out to about 15 minutes or so and I think around -0.16xg. So all the odd-lines in total come to about 23min and a -0.68xgf, which kinda means that we're probably getting pinned in our zone too much and unable to make our line changes quickly and efficiently.

But the new lines seem to be keepers for now. Domi on the Tavares line is something to stay far away from.

but you can see the reality better when looking at the D-pairs, who usually get stuck out there together when we're pinned.

McCabe-Tanev: 31:36, 29.4xgf%, -0.66xgf
Benoit-OEL: 29:48, 51.5xgf%, +0.07xgf
Rielly-Carlo: 28:54, 32.9xgf%, -0.52xgf

Rielly-McCabe: 4:00, 33.3xgf%, -0.04xgf
Rielly-OEL: 3:24, 89.1xgf%, +0.36xgf
Benoit-McCabe: 2:12, 0.0xgf%, -0.06xgf
OEL-Tanev: 1:54, 100.0xgf%, +0.13xgf

and then the other odd pairings come out to about 7min and about even in xg.

So we really want to start seeing some better results with our top 2 pairings on the ice. The silver lining is that for once out bottom pairing seems to be an actual strength in the playoffs, and OEL seems to doing well in general.

We should probably be giving Broobie all sorts of credit for salvaging Holmberg's career. He liked him right away in training camp and stuck with him even when he was scuffling. He's still not showing scoring hands but he does everything else right.....and I still remember some pretty good scoring skill from him in top euro league competition. Some might still be in there.

usage stuff

5v5

Knies 16:31, +6.8dzs% --- Matthews 15:16, +10.9dzs% --- Marner 17:08, +11.1dzs%
Holmberg 12:44, -13.9dzs% --- Tavares 14:17, -12.5dzs% --- Nylander 14:49, -20.9dzs%
Lorentz 10:58, +0.0dzs% --- Laughton 12:11, +2.5dzs% --- Jarnkrok 11:22, +5.1dzs%
McMann 11:01, -3.6dzs% --- Domi 13:03, -11.4dzs% --- Robertson 9:30, +0.0dzs%

McCabe 19:16, +7.0dzs% --- Tanev 17:27, +6.8dzs%
Rielly 18:49, -9.8dzs% --- Carlo 16:03, -12.5dzs%
Benoit 16:45, +1.9dzs% --- OEL 18:27, -3.4dzs%

- so while the Laughton line is obviously being used as a checking line, it's not being used like a Keefe Kampf line. It's actually the Matthews line that is doing the heavy lifting defensively. the laughton line is being used as just a normal bottom-6 checking line, while the Robertson line is being used a similar amount as a bottom-6 offensive line.

- also we've been leading for most of the time so far, so that would tend to increase the Laughton line's usage and decrease the Robertson line's usage. In games we trail more, you'd expect more ice time for the offensive line.

- Tavares line getting very cushy offensive usage. Which is probably the right call.

- defense is as expected, though maybe the 3rd pair getting so much ice time is a bit of a surprise. though the blowout game 1 boosts their ice time there.
