The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

I ddont think demanding, but from a demand and look at all those resources angle Sharks/Mammoth seem to be the ideal phone calls, maybe the Hawks if there is interest from AM/Chi

Sharks/Mammoth/Hawks? He'd be leaving because he wants to win now. No other reason.

It would be Dallas, Minnesota, Vegas, or something like that.

Funny how all the media coverage of the Matthews thing has been "There's no reason not to believe the best insiders in the business so it must be true". Whenever Dreger or CJ has a "scoop" it's mana from heaven and must absolutely be accurate!

From his perspective absolutely.

From Toronto's looking at what i could get in return it would be the three i mentioned, but i think he could squint and look at the Sharks/Mammoth as close enough

California, Celebrini, up and coming, no Berube, no potential rebuild two years from now, etc.
They are easily a playoff team next year in the shit pacific. If they got a healthy Matthews i see no reason why they couldnt win the division.

A deal based around one of Misa/Smith/2 and a few of their excellent secondary prospects ( their system is absurd) is pretty easy to craft if this was the path that was ultimately chosen ( it shouldnt be)

I think Misa + 2 + prospects would have to be the base deal, though it's a big risk giving him up for three unproven guys.

But...that kind of deal could be sort of a sneaky crazy deal that turns you into a cup winner in the near term if all three guys end up being stars.

I think its fair to debate which of Smith/Misa/2 is the best asset.

If you are trading AM, then you are certainly more comfortable taking 2 and being patient with a Reid/Carels, and 2 is probably the only/best way of getting that number 1 D that you so badly need.

2/Eklund/Prospect could be a thing?

There's no universe where you can trade Matthews, even diminished, unhealthy, coming off his worst season Matthews, for just #2 as the centerpiece.

It has to be one of Smith/Misa and #2, and a prospect behind them. It's otherwise a situation where you could be trading your (the?) best pure goal scorer of all time for three guys who end up being okay or busting. There's only 45 NHL games between all three assets there if it's Misa.

Why is Misa the 2 last year, that much better than the 2 this year, which represents a legit number 1 D?

I don't think you understand what I'm saying. It would start with both Misa and the #2, and require more.

It may not make sense for the Sharks, but it wouldn't make sense for the Leafs otherwise.

Yeah, i dont think there is a world where you get 2 of smith/2/misa.

Matthews has 2 years left, in this scenario is asking out with a NMC, and might be a bit broken.
