The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

Button tossing malholtra in the conversation is hilarious..

1.34ppg in the ohl this year. Mckenna with 1.46ppg in college and 2.3 ppg in the whl last year. They aren't even in the same stratosphere. That's how you know it's just leafs hatred at that point.

I dont even think Malholtra belongs in the same convo as Carels/Reid.

IMO he's 5th at best and only really in the conversation because he's probably the best C in the draft

So now he's just admitting it.

It's crazy. How could Matty and Marner have been good with each other when Paul is trashing Matty all day long? Unreal that out of the American, the Swede, and the Toronto kid, the Toronto kid was the toxic one who burned his bridges and left the team.
Paul has done this multiple times over the years. Once a bunch of people figure out he's behind the burner, he deletes his account and starts again. And yeah, he usually just admits that it's him, or at least never denies it. This is textbook Paulie. He's a fucking lunatic.

His uptick in production in the playoffs makes him more interesting to me than he was before. But I'd need to look deeper to see if it's just lucky small sample randomness or if he really did come on later in the year to go from being just good to realgud.

Still should be nowhere near the #1 pick, mind you; that was just a weak troll by button. But there's a chance he's at least very good.

I have more faith in Stenberg to be a PPG+ winger, and Carels/Reid to be legit 1D than i do Malholtra a number 1 C

Ya of course. There's a chance he was serious when he called Reid, Carels and Stenberg possible #1s, but he gave the troll away when he mentioned Malholtra. Take it from Presto, don't get greedy when you troll.

Thing with McKenna’s is its not like he tanked this year.

He finished 2nd in ppg and 5th in ncaa scoring playing for a second or third rate d1 program and second on team Canada in scoring at the Wjcs as the youngest player on the team.

Nobody in his draft class has his pedigree. It’s a no doubt first pick and the leafs would be dumb as shit to take anybody else.

these talking heads are coping big time because the Leafs got McKenna so now they've gotta do damage control as best they can

if the Flames or Jets had gotten him they'd be jerking each other off about what a shot in the arm this is for the franchise etc

Leafs would be dumb as shit to hire Tre, to let him run the last deadline, to hire Berube, to not fire Berube, to keep Berube after firing Tre.

There is a lot of scary precedent. I don't really fear we're going to screw it up, but I will rest easy the day after the draft.

I mean, that and the fact that when the Leafs won a fake draft lottery on TSN's trade deadline show, Button was emphatic that Gavin McKenna was the player the Leafs should pick in that scenario, and that there was a big gap between him and second place.

And there were only three games left in McKenna's season after that point, in which he scored a goal and a couple of assists. So it's not like the drastic change in opinion could be based on anything tangible aside from the team that won the pick. Transparent as fuck.

I'll give Wheeler and Pronman some credit. They were dumb and ignorant of the mindblowing stats that he's been putting up and too reliant and cocky about their very own eye test, but they've been less enthused with mckenna for awhile. Button's tune changed the second the leafs won the lottery though. Hilarious.

I don't follow Pronman closely enough to know, but is galaxy-braining the consensus first overall pick a regular thing for him? Because if the only two times he's done this are 2016 and 2026, that looks a wee bit suspicious.

The team is a fucking wagon. It's so hard to know who is carrying the water when the team is a fucking wagon. He's 4th among forwards on that team in PPG. He's the youngest of the 4, but still

Benak (D+1, 4th rd): 1.60ppg
O'Brien (D+1, 1st rd): 1.76ppg
Vanacker (D+2, 1st rd): 1.33ppg
Malhotra (D): 1.25ppg

I would be taking a long ass look at his 5v5 numbers vs that stacked ass powerplay.
