The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

Basically hire anyone who is willing to form a true partnership with R&D, Sports Science and the GM. And since Chayka is the GM, that's obviously going to be one of the main prerequisites so we have little to worry about. DING DONG the drunk is dead. That's all that matters. No more drunken stupor freak accidents in the "gym"!

I would honestly consider past head coaching experience an extreme detriment here, unless its Cassidy, Woodcroft or some weird one and done thats been doing nice work in the AHL or something.

Elliotte said John already met with Nylander btw, I'm confident that a lot of the meeting was Willy blasting the fuck out of Berube. I'm sure John didn't need much help arriving to this decision, but fuck it, give Willy a statue.
Like you said, speak to the man, but i'd be stunned if Chayka didnt know he wanted to fire him while he was being interviewed.

Marner for Cassidy, McKenna and a 1st

You have to wonder if they are pulling a Devils with Mehta since the Cassidy stuff got out yesterday.

A real process worked for GM though.
Yeah I'm good with them taking their time and ensuring everyone is on the same page before pulling the trigger.

But you can't really go wrong with Cassidy, he's data driven! And that'll be evident the first time John speaks to him.

Booyeah.

And man, not that we didn’t know it anyway, but simply incredible the degree to which these insiders are just openly shitty know-nothing trolls trying to get a rise out of Leaf fans. All that “Berube is staying” shit flushed right down the toilet.

Something to keep in mind about all of the Auston Matthews reporting from the same cast of characters this off-season.

I know that some GMs would have kept Craig, but I actually don't give Frosty Fuckwit any credit here. This couldn't have possibly been a more obvious and easy decision. The anxiety surrounding it was warranted because it's the Leafs, but I always found it impossibly unlikely that he wouldn't fire the guy in the end. Data driven GM looks at roster --> sees it's not that bad --> looks at nerdies the last 2 years --> keeps him? No, that was never remotely likely.
