2025-26 NHL Miscellaneous Thread

If everybody keeps their picks and does the obvious stuff, it would make sense for Vancouver to take Malhotra even if you toss aside the stuff with his Dad. He’s a riser as a prospect in a draft calls where a lot of the top guys are kind of sliders, he has good size and is a natural center. He’s also more of an Eichel, Barkov kind of guy who is good in all three zones. Exactly the kind of player that franchise desperately needs. There’s a chance they galaxy brain their way out of it, Vancouver being Vancouver and all, but it would be a logical pick.

Also, if Vancouver does go with Malhotra at 3 and both Toronto and San Jose go with the big wingers, it’s gonna set up an absolute frenzy of quality defense for the next 3 or 4 picks and that in itself could set off a bunch of trades. Also, several of those D are right siders, which will help juice up interest. I’m hoping for a bit of a wild first round in terms of swapping, shifting and trading. That said, I kind of expect San Jose to grab Reid at 2. Big right handed do-it-all D with 2 seasons of point per game production in the OHL that would slot right into their development curve

I agree with that assessment JB, if Reid goes at two suddenly you have Stenberg as the big fish, but if it goes McKenna, Stenberg and Malhotra the D bonanza starts and you know other teams are dropping into that mix via trade if possible. Sharks don’t need another winger and you would think they covet a top pairing D at 2!

Yeah, depends on how the Sharks rate Stenberg (or McKenna should he fall to 2) really. If they see him with a better upside that Reid or feel like his set of skills fills the gaps in what they’ve already got up front then they’ll go with the upside over the need. But, yeah … they need D. I could also see the Sharks trading down, especially if another Top 10 team wants to sweeten their pot for Stenberg. They can almost certainly still get a high quality D prospect so long as they stick in the Top 10. This draft has a lot of them.

I know I’m a sentimental old sap, but I have really enjoyed the home-based trophy presentations this year.

That said, Werenski should be grateful that both Q Hughes and Makar got hurt and missed 10 or more games this year. He’s very good, but he ain’t in their league in terms of game impact.

While we were busy yesterday …

Colorado shuffled their front office. Joe Sakic will take on GM duties again, and Chris MacFarland was allowed to leave to take the GM job with the Predators. Kind of a change without a change, since Sakic was obviously involved in big picture decision-making all along. Still, they needed a head to throw out to their increasingly disenchanted fans and chose MacFarland’s.

Congrats to Nashville for getting a much better GM than I thought they would.

Also good news for the Canes that the Preds new GM isn’t Darren Yorke.

Yeah, they ended up talking to a bunch of AGMs before MacFarland landed in their lap. The thing of it is, Nashville’s a pretty good job. The ownership is engaged but not overly so, it’s a good market with a good building and they get really good support when they have a decent team. The current roster is an issue, but you can get free agents to come there and get guys to sign long term deals so it’s not that big a hill to climb in the long term. I never really understood what they were doing with this hire, but they ended up getting an experienced GM after all.

Tulsky's name still gets tossed around as someone teams are trying to hire.
So long as Tulsky maintains his relationship with Dundon, he can probably stay as long as he wants. He’s got WAY more freedom here than people think. Most GMs in the NHL have at least one old school hockey guy looking over their shoulder. Some have LOTS of them. Job security in that gig is the pearl of great price.

Tulsky chatting with fans before games, even playoff games is a treat for anyone that tailgates…strongly recommend taking one of those in, beyond all the intelligence and knowledge, the man is humble, kind and very willing to listen and engage in everything about the team and the fan experience to make things better. Waddell was a great dude too but Tulsky seems like a real gem for this organization.

The Leafs are interviewing Laviolette and Roy. Please....yes! Hire either one! I loved Roy as a player. I had a 33 Habs sweater when I was a young man. But him coaching the Leafs.....

That seems like more of the "we did an exhaustive search" tactic then we are narrowing in on those two guys. The Leafs to me are not a great team, especially when you look at the Atlantic Division as a whole moving forward. I just wish the Leafs would realize they need more of a full rebuild with a younger coach than this pipe dream of we just need a quick retool on the fly sort of thing.

Toronto chews up inexperienced coaches and spits them out. They’ve been down that road fairly recently and I get whey they don’t want to go back for more. That said, they REALLY need a coach who fits what they’re doing with the roster and I’m not sure they have a clue what they’re doing with roster construction yet. Honestly, I think they could do a lot worse than Lavi … so long as they are going to give him some guys who can play his game. If they aren’t going to make many changes, then it’s not going to work any better than it did with Berube. Roy is more interesting. I thought he did a very good job with the Islanders for the most part. He’s not a tactician, really, as he’s more of a motivator/vibes guy at this stage. He might actually be a pretty good fit if they’re just going to tinker with the roster.

More concerning if I’m a Leafs fan (and I am not), is that both of those guys would be lost with a young lineup. Which signals that the Leafs really are setting up for a light retool instead of major roster changes. IMO, nothing good lies down that road even if you get the coaching hire right.

Multiple sources indicate that Dylan Larkin has requested a trade from Detroit. He has 5 years left at a reasonable $8.7 million AAV, taking him to 34 years old. He also has a full NTC until July 1, 2028 when it becomes a 10 team NTC.
