2025-26 NHL Miscellaneous Thread

Yeah, their whole decade of hoovering up every name player on the market is probably done unless they can find somebody to take some aging mistakes off their hands. And they have exactly one decent player in the farm system. So the cheap option doesn’t really exist.

And frankly, they’re better off letting Andersson get over-paid by somebody else. He really sucks under pressure, as we saw in the last three games when he was a mistake machine.
They might ready have a done deal for him.

Look … I’m happy enough with Vegas making a mistake, but Rasmus Andersson was borderline over-paid on his existing deal ($4.5 million or so). At the end of the day, he’s basically Sean Walker. A pretty good puck-lugger who’s decent in his own end and plays with an edge. He had those two massive years in Calgary (50 points, then 49) but that two year period was a freaking mirage for everybody not named Matt Tkachuk or Johnny Gaudreau. Lindholm, Hanifin, Mangiapane … all still getting over-paid because Johnny Hockey, the better Chucklehead and Jacob Markstrom went on a two year heater while they were happy passengers.

Probably nothing, I didn't see anything official, but have twice, in the last 5 minutes seen someone post "Auston Matthews" traded.

The first buyout window opens 48 hours after the conclusion of the Final, so about 11 pm tonight.

Old friend Ethan Bear re-signed with the Islanders, 1 year/2 way. He gets $850k at the NHL level, $325k in the AHL with a $425k guarantee, a $75k raise at the NHL level. He spent all of last year in the AHL. He and Brandon Sutter were probably the biggest Covid casualties.

Sean McIndoe at The Athletic helpfully reminds us to celebrate the Dallas Stars today as the playoffs’ ultimate loser. They lost to the team who lost to the team who lost to the team who lost to the team that won the Stanley Cup. It'll go on Jim Nill's GM of the Year resume for next season.

But he won the trade because he got the best player dontcha know.

Kind of a weird trade, that. Leafs fans were convinced they’d get more for Woll than a like for like kind of deal but maybe they’re sleeping on Andrei a bit. He’s little but thick and a sharp puck mover. I thought Philly made a big mistake when they moved him out of the lineup against Carolina because he can process the puck in his own end really well. He needs to find a team that won’t hold his size against him. Not sure that’s Toronto, but it definitely wasn’t Philly. Woll is a better goalie than Ersson because, who isn’t? But they were paying him premium backup money and at best he was going to platoon. Benoit is … fine. More size than Andrei, but much more basic. Kind of a preferences trade. Strange to see this early in the post season.

Also, there are reports that Torts is out in Vegas … actually, I’m now seeing official news. I get it for both parties. This is a transactional relationship with a set end date and both parties would have needed to want it to extend. I think Torts is smart enough to know that if he had agreed to an extension, he would just be keeping the chair warm waiting for the eventual hook. Sounds like Vegas really likes their AHL guy, Ryan Craig, and a younger coach might be the fresh approach they really need.

Apparently the Leafs also have the Russian kid on the Marlies that has played really well in the AHL playoffs and is out of options next year...so Stolarz, Hildeby, Ehrsson and the Russian kid is still there even after Woll is moved out. The Leafs are not winning much next year so no need to have two vet guys in net...meanwhile Vladar and Woll is a nice tandem in Philly.

Hockey Night in Canada on CBC is no more. Rogers holds the Canadian TV rights and sub-licensed Hockey Night in Canada to the CBC. But Roger’s’ new deal kicks in next season and they didn’t renew the contract with CBC. Hockey Night in Canada will continue, Rogers owns the rights to use the name.

CBC will launch a new Saturday night prime time show featuring Canadian athletes competing at home and at the biggest events around the world. They’re leaning into their status as home of Team Canada in the 2028 and 2030 Olympics.
