World Cup 2026 Thread

Reyna and Aaronson wasn't a winning combination in midfield: they're pretty similar in how they play. And Tim Weah looked like he didn't belong, which was disappointing. But to me, the biggest concern was Turner as our #2. Overall, he didn't look good.
As for Max, didn't the announcers suggest he almost came on until Poch went a different direction. Just saying ...

Hopefully this didn't expose what appears to be a lack of depth. But yes, getting Puli his minutes after the extended time off was a good thing, and I thought Berhalter more than proved he should be in the mix playing alot of minutes.

BTW, these are the current "third place standings". Scotland currently sit ninth and out of the World Cup

Yesterday's winners included Spain 1-0 over Uruguay, and decisive wins for France, Senegal and Belgium.

Cabo Verde's 0-0 draw sees them through to the Round of 32, and Iran's draw with Egypt all but assured their passage as well.

Cabo Verde the smallest nation ever to make this stage. Oh, and there are 7 African nations that have qualified, with Algeria in with shout to be #8. 😳

Oh, there’s absolutely no depth. But anybody who’s surprised by that at this point clearly hasn’t been paying attention for the last … I dunno … 8 years?

I thought the US match was actually a pretty good sign. An almost entirely rotated squad largely outplayed a Turkey side that was going all out to not be completely embarrassed in the tournament and were not not playing a bit dirty. I'm pretty sure the US ended up with the only yellow card in the match which is um... interesting. It's also just kind of hard to judge depth on a full rotation like this.

It’s Bielsa. They're lucky he didn’t get their passports revoked after they way they acted in that game with Spain. Disgusting displays of childishness.

Alas, the shadenfreuder becomes the schadenfreudee. That was a rough one. I don't know why we decided to play a lineup entirely made up of centerbacks. I still cannot believe the performance that Verbruggen had and then to make that save in the shootout only for it to bounce off your leg and trickle into the goal.

Two world cups in a row going out in PK's to a shithousing keeper.

Yeah, it was a TENSE day at the old World Cup yesterday. No offense to VDC with this comment, but neither the Dutch nor the Germans had the kind of talent gap you’d expect in those two matchups, and if you can get it to PKs then all bets are off. There are lessons to be learned there, if anyone cares to dare to learn them.

No offense taken. Koeman should be embarrassed by that lineup and tactical changes. I truly will never understand why Dutch Manute Bol couldn't make it at Burnley and yet has 52 caps. I guess I'm just spoiled watching the NBA to know that guys that size actually can be athletes as well, but Weghorst moves exactly as you would expect him to move when you look at him. And then as if I couldn't hate the decision to play van de Ven at fullback this tournament, Ronald said hold my beer and decided to play him at wingback. Summerville and Gakpo were the only people capable of creating any attack in the entire lineup and both played well, but they were completely alone. Gakpo's recent events are also very personal to my own recent events so that was all pretty emotional for me.

That lineup and gameplan got what it deserved. It just sucked to watch.
