GDT: Canes @ Oilers 10/22 9:00

He never has a good explanation for that. Maybe he’s done well in practice. Maybe it was because goalies don’t have a book on him. Maybe he drew names out of a hat.
Apparently a lot of times it's because the guy in question asked if he could have a go. It's a crapshoot either way when you only have one or two reliably decent options.

On the game, it was entertaining to watch, and I thought both teams looked very good offensively. The absence of Staal is really showing how valuable he is - especially on the PK, which has taken a nose-dive (of course having the firepower of the Oilers has something to do with it). Also, I know KK has played better of late, but there are still too many times where the puck goes to him, only to die.

Koochie hopefully can run with the great start he has had and be the lead dog in net, Bussi is a hot mess in there to start the year and the movement and his “all over the place” style gets him in tons of trouble.

By GameScore, that was actually KK's best game since rejoining the lineup. He's been kicking around at +1.something, but actually got to +2.4 last night. Whenever you get above +2, then you're having a high quality net impact. Some of that is playing with two quality linemates and getting 20 shifts to pile up impact stats, but it was a solid effort. He just doesn't move the needle defensively as much as you need him to, and his offense is notoriously fickle. At least he's competitively engaged in the games now. Those first couple of games back in the lineup, he really looked like he was just trying to stay off the radar.

The shootout has always been a solution to a problem that wasn't in need of an urgent fix. OT games went on too long. They should have played 5 minutes of 4 on 4 and then 3 on 3 as long as it takes. Or just 3 on 3 until someone scores. Broken down into 5 or 10 minute periods.

It was a fun game and EDM’s firepower is no joke. Certainly wasn’t a goalie duel 😉 Bussi has had big saves and the odd brain cramp. PK hasn’t really been any better, either. Of the two, Bussi is the more cerebral guy in net and Kochetkov the more emotional lead. Given injuries, call ups and benchwarmers playing, and it’s a roadtrip, I’m pretty good with the outcome— just a fun game. That was one heck of hit by Carrier on Ekholm!

Brind'Amour wouldn't have to answer questions about the shootout lineup if he just took requests from the fans. I would actually trust the fans suggestions more.

My fan shootout list for last night would have looked like:

Ehlers
Blake
Svech

Ehlers actually scores on breakaways (isn't that sort of a good indicator of shootout success?)

Blake at least has creative ideas he can employ

Svech has more shootout goals than any player in Canes history and at 40%, it's hard not to run him out in the top 3 (Matt Cullen, as good as I remember him being on shootouts, also rocked a 40% as a Cane).

He's 0-6 in his career, so ... not really, no.

Jarvis and Svech are pretty good and the third guy is a coin flip so far as I can tell. I have a hard time getting too worked up about it so long as Brindy isn't rolling out the senior citizen parade or something.

He's already going to Toronto in a couple seasons on a $23 million per AAV contract.

All these mega stars praise what we do and are envious of the winning, but in the end they want the megabucks and big market or favorable tax situation.

He’ll only get 2 of the 3 in Toronto.

Here is a question. With a star the magnitude of McDavid, does market size matter? If he played here or Nashville or Utah, would his profile diminish that much, if at all?

No it wouldn't. Especially here after that Cup run and more National exposure. At least 4 times as much than the 2002 finals. The Panthers have not had issues when they had stars like Peppers, Newton, McCaffrey, etc....both Duke and UNC and State when they have the talent get tons of national exposure. Hockey is a different beast, I know, but we are getting more National games then ever and being talked about on Sports Center and Fox more than ever before....no longer need to watch the NHL channel until the last 3 minutes when they get their last minute hurricane news.

And with Streaming services that shrinks the market size issue
