The Canes return home from the State Fair roadie for a matchup against the best team in the league on National TV.

The Canes took care of business on the trio, picking up 7 of 10 points. Mark Jankowski was lost for the last 4 games, so KK stepped up, Skyler Brind’Amour had a couple of solid games and life went on. It looks like one of the wounded, Taylor Hall could be back tonight, he was a full participant in practice and was activated off IR. Jankowski skated before practice and RBA said that, while he expects him to skate this morning, he’s still not ready. Kochetkov was in the starter’s crease.

The Bruins come in with the league’s best points percentage, with 19 points in 12 games, 1 point less than the Canes in 1 fewer game played. New captain David Pastrnak leads with 7 goals and 10 assists. Trailing him, Fraser Minten has 5 goals and Morgan Geekie has 8 assists. Everyone that has played more than a handful of games has scored a goal except Nikita Zadorov. Jeremy Swayman has started 9 games in goal, he’s at 2.20/.920. He’s backed up by 27 year old rookie Michael DiPietro who, prior to this season had started 2 NHL games, both for Vancouver, 1 in 2019, the other in 2022. He played 6 minutes of mop up duty last year for the Bruins. He’s at 1.69/.941 in his 3 games. The Bruins are 3rd in the league in goals per game, 2nd in goals against. They’re 12th on the PP, 18th on the PK.

Black jerseys tonight. National TV on ESPN with Bob Wischusen and Ray Ferraro on the call.

I was never really a Don Sweeney fan, but he did terrific work on the Bruins' re-tool in the post Chara/Bergeron/Marchand era. They're probably a year ahead of schedule, but that's a luxury problem. Nobody in the media really seemed to buy it last year when they were a 100 point team, but the Bruins are more than backing it up this season and with $7 mil in Cap space they have plenty of juice to make a deadline deal or a midseason trade to firm things up even more. Frankly, it's all very annoying.

Also ... my memory tells me that the Canes kind of suck in the first game back from the State Fair Roadtrip, but a quick check of actual results indicates that during the Brind'Amour era, they're actually well above .500 and only played one stinker ... last year against Vegas when they had a million injuries and the plague was running through the locker room.

Per Walt Ruff, there is a new defenseman on the ice at the morning skate. But he’s skating with Reilly as an extra. Jankowski was in a regular jersey too. Kochetkov was in the starter’s crease.

Carrier - Aho - Svechnikov
Ehlers - Stankoven - Blake
Hall - Martinook - Jarvis
Robinson - Kotkaniemi - Deslauriers
Jankowski

Slavin - Chatfield
Miller - Walker
Gostisbehere - Välimäki
Reilly - Nikishin

Hall left practice early, so Jankowski replaced him on PP2

PP1: Aho, Blake, Ehlers, and Svechnikov with Gostisbehere
PP2: Jankowski, Jarvis, Kotkaniemi, and Stankoven, with Miller

Sounds like this year though the flu seems less bad

FWIW, Boston appears to be injury free at this stage of proceedings. Good for them, I guess. With Peterka coming in, old friend Morgan Geekie got booted off of Pasta's line and has promptly crashed to earth production-wise, with only one goal thus far. He's on the third line with Minten. Another old friend is having a better go of it, as Elias Lindhom is playing really good two way hockey on the 2nd line with Hagans and Middlestedt. He's got 10 points and that line has been holding their own defensively with 55-56% of expected goal share thus far. That's a big change from last season when their middle six was getting caved in a lot of the time. Boston's depth up front has been much more stout this season. This team is a tough matchup and a tough out.
