2019-20 Hurricanes Prospects and Checkers Thread

I’m also assuming that Edmundson and TVR will walk and Fleury will be re-signed. I don’t remember what the rules are on expiring contracts. Assuming Fleury is re-signed, it will probably be a 1 year deal, he’s arbitration eligible and will probably just get his QO this offseason. That would mean that both he and Bean would be on expiring contracts for the expansion draft.

But even before we get to the expansion draft, we’ll have 6 NHL defensemen next season. So for Bean to grab a lineup spot, he’ll have to beat out one of Fleury, Gardiner or Skjei. Or Waddell will find a trade for any of them.

They ought to reverse the deadline deals. Heck if you can be a seller and then be gifted a playoff spot you don’t deserve why not?

The problem with protecting 4 D is then you can only protect 4 forwards. Jordan Staal is a mandatory protect. Then you protect Aho, Svech, Necas. That leaves Turbo, Foegele (and by that point Geekie) exposed.

I thought Fleury had a decent season and was showing signs of promise as a keeper. He should be affordable next year and has some value as a physical defenseman that was starting to impose his body around more on the backend. Bean seems like the type of skilled offensive backliner that the Canes should at least take a good look at next season before simply trading him away. Maybe an injury allows Bean some playing time and a chance to show what he can do at the NHL level. I'm sure Francis would be just fine selecting Bean or Fleury to his Seattle expansion draft mix if they are still Canes and available.

At the Expansion Draft, Waddell is going to send a mid-round pick to Seattle so they pick Connor Brickley instead of Bean.

Eric Tulsky instead of the mid-round pick to Seattle in that transaction...

Francis already has Alex Mandrycky. But you can never have too much depth in the analytics department.

Waddell can counter with Darren Yorke. He was described to me as Francis’ personal analytics guy when he was AGM.

As many people know this area is full of stats people. If for some reason Tulsky left they could find somebody good locally. BTW his degrees are not in stats. BA in chemistry and physics Harvard. PhD in chemistry Berkeley. There are a lot of people in stats who don't have a degree in that field. For example co founder of SAS John Sall.

I doubt Carolina will go with the 4 forwards/4 defense model. They'll all but surely go the 8 skaters route. No way you leave Turbo or Necas hanging out there like you'd have to do if you could only protect 4 forwards. The D group is deeper, and you might see them make an offer to somebody like TVR that you would assume to be gone to cover this base.

But also ... this is all aways off and stuff changes. For all we know, you could see a guy have a career ending or altering injury between now and then ... or somebody doing something Titanically stupid off the ice. Bottom line - it's a first world problem to have too many quality players to protect them all. It gives you the ability to make a protective deal from a position of strength for a change. That's not a bad thing at all.

off court/ice/field issues are very low compared to other sports. Since the move Burke hit his wife and Chiasson killed himself by drunk driving. And the TV woman got a DUI but kept her job for that season.

And Darling decided not to train for an entire year ... stuff happens

Wasn’t O’Neil busted for public wizzing?

compared to the NFL public peeing is nothing . NFL has rapes, major wife beatings, drug arrests, and a murderer who killed himself in prison.

The league and NHLPA are expected to push back the June 1 signing date by 1 month. The only Canes prospect that is affected is Luke Henman, drafted in the 4th round, 2018. He‘s a lefty shooting center, listed at 6’0”, 164 (!) lbs. He had 25g, 49a in 63 games for Blaineville-Boisbriand in the Q. He and Svech were the only major junior players the Canes drafted that year.

So, Dominik Bokk. You think he's playing in the USA this fall (or whenever the AHL starts up again)? Does he get a camp invite (is he eligible for one)? Sounds like he was very good in the World Juniors, but he's not exactly lighting the Swedish League on fire.

Coincidentally, Matt Somma and Alex Ohani, the guys behind the Canes Prospects and Future Canes Twitter accounts did a joint prospect ranking. They both agree that we don’t have any “elite” prospects. They also agree that Ryan Suzuki and Dominik Bokk are the 2 best prospects (Ohani also adds Anttoni Honka). Assuming there is a training camp, there isn’t anything that prevents the Canes from bringing him in. He’s under contract, the Blues signed him almost immediately after drafting him in 2018. He was technically loaned to Rogle last season, but CapFriendly notes that he (and Suzuki) are exempt from the 50 contract limit; we’re at 41, so no concerns there anyway. Someone had him on the short list to be one of the “Black Aces” during the playoffs too.

Strange how after the graduation of a player or two like Necas and Geekie and a few trades of guys like Gauthier, Priskie and Kukkonan to name a few, and suddenly the Canes look to have a very middle of the road prospect pool after not too long ago The Athletic had the Canes ranked in the Top 5 in the entire NHL. I agree there is nothing that looks "elite" any longer in terms of current prospects...but the Hurricanes hopefully can continue to develop a steady stream of these other guys (Suzuki, Bokk, Bean, Kochetkov, Puistola, Honka) that can be decent NHL players.

Here is a good article by Scott Wheeler in The Athletic about Patrik Puistola. It’s pet of his “Gifted” series and includes video to illustrate his points.

The article has links to previous profiles, so you can look at what he had to say last year about Martin Necas.

1. That Wheeler piece on Puistola is tremendous, as have been all the articles in that series that I've read. The video illustrations really add a lot to that kind of deep dive prospect analysis. That said, if you want to really get into it, set aside a good 30-45 minutes ... maybe more if you like to repeat the video to make sure you see what he's seeing.

2. It's probably going to be a weird year, and maybe a weird couple of years for prospect development. With almost every league in the world have some sort of schedule impact, the normal rhythms of these things are going to be disrupted. Yeah, in a normal cycle the Canes would bring Puistola, Bokk and Honka (and others) over from Europe for camp because that's what you do. You get the kids familiar with the setup, the other players and the staff in addition to getting hands on evaluation time. But what if their leagues are starting play before NHL camps open in 2020 ... or maybe 2021? That seems very, very likely at the moment. Do you disrupt their season just for a month if there's zero chance they're playing in North American next season at all? Probably not.

3. We're set up for a transition in the development right now and the ratings will probably reflect that. I think the pipeline is in pretty good shape overall, but they're moving from Francis' "bulk value" approach to a much more risk/reward focused stance as Tulsky's influence on the process grows. Teams that lean that way rarely top the prospect ranking charts other than in specific cycles when several risks pay off at the same time. It's a conscious decision, and I think it should yield more high end guys overall ... but it's not always going to look good at any particular fixed moment in time ... which is what those prospect rankings always represent.

The Greenville Swamp Rabbits have not renewed the contract of head coach Kevin Kerr. He was 54-71-11 in 2 seasons. They were 3rd in the South Division, 29 points behind Florida and South Carolina when the 2019-20 season ended.
