2019-20 Hurricanes Prospects and Checkers Thread

For the record, I was a bit surprised to see Gibbons sent down because I always assumed they signed him specifically to be a 13th forward on the NHL level. I know they wanted to bank some salary cap space, but it always seemed to me that they signed him specifically because he was a cheap vet who could play all three forward positions on the 4th line.

Yeah I kinda of assumed (incorrectly) that he was with the team. Well good depth option. I think he's got some good skills, and speed for a 4th liner

It's all about banking that cap space early. I fully expect Gibbons will be our 13th forward for the road trip.

Checkers last week:

Oct 11 Bridgeport L 4-2 Ned with the loss. Forsling and Luostarinen with the goals

Oct 12 Bridgeport W 4-1 Forsberg with the Win. Gibbons, Geekie x2 and Luostarinen with the goals

Back on the road this coming week. Friday @Utica and Saturday @Syracuse

We’re full up with goalies, so Jeremy Helvig has been sent to Jacksonville of the ECHL. Ned and Forsberg are in Charlotte and Booth is already in Greenville with 2 other goalies.

Jacksonville is Winnipeg’s ECHL affiliate.

An article from the Checkers website about Chase Priskie. He didn’t see a fit in Washington’s system and liked the way he saw players in the Canes system developing. Checkers coach Ryan Warsofsky was also familiar with him from his time as head coach for the South Carolina Stingrays, the Caps AHL affiliate and working with him at prospects camps.

Thanks for sharing that article. Lots of insight into not only his decision but the way the org is perceived by prospects/players.

Pyotr Kochetkov has been traded to HC Vityaz in the KHL. They’re based in Moscow. They have some guy named Alex Semin on the roster too.

Jamieson Rees had 3 points in his first game back from suspension as Sarnia beat Barrie 5-1. Suzuki had an assist on the only Barrie goal.

With the way Alexei Melnichuk has played and with #1 goalie Magnus Hellberg back from injury, Kochetkov wasn't going to be playing KHL games for St. Petersburg SKA anytime soon. Still trying to piece it all together but it looks like HC Vityaz traded Alexander Samonov (6-0-0 0.88 GAA .976 Sv%) and forward Artem Shvets-Rogovoy for Kochetkov and forward Alexei Byvaltsev.

Anyhow we will see if Kochetkov plays and how much. The other goalie left in HC Vityaz is a 32 year old vet who has posted (4-3-4 1.88 GAA .940 Sv%) Those 2 forwards look like a wash to me so I don't quite understand this trade unless one of top 2 SKA goalies got hurt. Hopefully its a better opp for Kochetkov.

Jeez ... did Vityaz HAVE to move Samsonov or something? Because otherwise they got screwed on that deal. I mean, it's the KHL so player movement sometimes has more to do with off the ice issues than anything else, but jeez ... that's so one-sided.

Rees has come back from his suspension with a vengeance. And Anttoni Honka is playing on the 2nd pair with JYP. His brother Julius is on the top pair while his contract situation with Dallas is up in the air. His contract with JYP has an out if his NHL situation is resolved by December 1. But he was a healthy scratch for the last 35 regular season games and all playoff games last year.

I get a sense something's wrong with Ned. It's hard to see him falling that fast into that kind of suckage. It seems like there must be something else going on.

Ned tends to stink in October only to settle down and charge back to life in November. This isn't the first time he's started slow.

Also, FWIW, Geekie has been centering Charlotte's first line and this year the Cherks are matching lines for the first time so he's been up against everybody else's top line. His line has had a rotating cast at wing, thanks to Canes callups and other circumstances. From what I hear, the kid has been lights out without a lot of help.

The Checkers have signed Jamie McGinn to a PTO. Brock’s oldest brother played only 23 games last season, 19 with the Panthers, 4 in the AHL.
