I think a lot of college committed players will be looking for options with a higher likelihood of actual game time next season. Especially if they think they're close to a pro contract. College programs are VERY much less than a sure thing this coming season.
Sure. That aside, it's better than sitting around not getting games in the US. His other options would possibly have been ... what? Finland doesn't take a ton of North American players under normal circumstances, and the KHL is a crap shoot in every possible way. That's about it for the top shelf. Germany and Switzerland might be options but the quality of play isn't the same calibre. The way Sweden has handled the virus, that’s probably the last place I’d want to play, aside from the KHL.
Well I was wrong about Filipe getting an NHL deal apparently. We have so many unsigned draft picks in the pipeline, I still think we would have been wasting a contract signing Filipe. He is a MA kid and played at Northeastern so him signing with Boston seems like a fit.
Makes more sense if you figure they're going to eventually go with Chicago as the affiliate. The Wolves typically stock a good chunk of their own roster. We do have a lot of unsigned picks in the pipeline, but not a lot of players in Charlotte. There are 6 non-roster forwards with contracts next year and 3 of them, Geekie, Bokk and Suzuki, won’t be there. That leaves Mattheos and the Cotton brothers. Pritchard, Smallman, Lorentz and Bishop are RFAs with arbitration rights. McCormick and Gibbons are UFAs and will almost definitely be moving in. The 2019 draft class has Rees and Murray but the other forwards are either in college or overseas. Signing Filipe to a 2 year entry level deal wouldn’t have been an organizational disaster and he could have been non-qualified after 2 seasons if he didn’t pan out or the likes of Puistola, Tieksola, Killinen or Drury came over.
Gets him playing and gets him away from Sweden's covid situation. Again, I keep seeing that they want him in the A ... but that's a long way down the calendar at the moment. The Canes have loaned Domenik Bokk to Krefeld in the German League. Hopefully this has a recall provision because the German League is a big step down from the Swedish League he played in last year.
