2019-Whenever Misc. Grab Bag Thread

Usl has a looooong way to go to compete with mls. There are only so many top tier soccer players willing to play in the US. Not sure how they can be relevant, relegation or not
USL is pursuing a very different model, however. It is based on the promotion-relegation model used globally, as opposed to MLS's unique (at least for football) fixed-franchise approach. It will likely initially be built for large markets that are not major markets (i.e. Raleigh) and mid-size markets (i.e., Louisville, Tulsa, and Colorado Springs) and could ultimately allow some of those smaller markets to field competitive teams.

Will it work? I have no idea, but I wouldn't be shocked if ultimately there is some sort of merger between MLS and USL that features promotion and relegation.

Do these folks think that MLS is not stable enough and is ripe for taking down? Or will this be a ploy to eventually merge ala AFL/NFL and ABA/NBA?
MLS is corrupt, poorly managed and ripe for a takedown, IMO. Will this lot do the job? Hard to say, but so long as Don Garber is in charge of MLS you wouldn't be smart to write off their chances entirely.

Who knew that allowing online gambling and having the gambling bonuses be the biggest sponsors in all of pro sports, would lead to problems? I'm shocked! Still waiting to see which NFL official goes down first.

Don’t forget a NBA referee went down in 2007. And there were point shaving scandals in college basketball every decade since the 50s.

The Canes have multiple gambling ads on the boards and the NHL had Betway as an on ice advertiser during the playoffs. And the Caps have Caesars Sportsbook patches on their home and 3rd jerseys. But the English Premier League will ban front of shirt sponsorships from gambling companies starting next season. That affects 11 of the 20 clubs in the EPL. But they’ll still be allowed to be sleeve sponsors on game kits and on training jerseys, as well as stadium advertising.
