2019-Whenever Misc. Grab Bag Thread

For background ... I cannot stand Miami, but watching them beat Ohio State with my Ohio State fan brother in law last night was one of the highlights of 2025 for me. Lololololololol
And down goes Bama. How does it feel, Tide? Hahahahahahahaha.

Watching Indiana bitch slap Alabama was the highlight of my week. Our basketball writer is a SEC love bug and I’ve listened to him all year. He texted earlier in our group text that Alabama should be in the championship because they are on the ‘easier side if the bracket’ and that a 3 or 4 loss SEC should always get in because they do it in the SEC every week like there isn’t football outside the SEC. Especially now days with the portal it’s leveled the playing ground somewhat. I screenshot his text and posted it in the group after every Indiana TD.

Alabama was way short of convincing this year so them getting hammered no real surprise. After all, a truly mediocre FSU team took them to the woodshed to open their year. However, Georgia looking amateurish and blowing a lead against Ole Miss? THAT was a surprise. And for every SEC homer banging the drum about how their conference is the only one that matters, there’s a counterpart from the B1G sounding just as narrow minded.

NIL has produced a lot of off book results and the power school homers hating it is probably it’s most endearing impact.

I just saw a graphic: the SEC is 4-9 in this bowl season, a bad record that couldn't happen to a more worthy league! Payback for hubris. The beleaguered ACC is 8-4. Only the Big 10 is better at 9-4.

My former partner, an NCSU linebacker, e-mailed that little tidbit to me today.

It makes sense. Despite Florida State and Clemson being awful this year, the ACC actually had a pretty good season overall. The pre season attention was largely on FSU, Miami, Clemson and UNC and only one of them had anything like a quality season, but that kind of obscured the fact that the rest of the league wasn’t half bad. When the pundits don’t see what they expect to see, the general assumption is often that everything has gone wrong. It did … but mostly for UNC, FSU and Clemson (and Virginia Tech I guess, although what anyone was expecting of them is a mystery to me). For the most part everybody else either hit or exceeded expectations.

Second time they’ve won the division with a losing record.
Only five times has an NFL team made the playoffs with a losing record in a non-strike-shortened season...the NFC South has accounted for three of those times (Panthers in 2014 and 2025 and Bucs in 2022).

That was maybe the most entertaining game they played all season. The Rams kind of suck on the road, so that alone gives the Panthers a puncher’s shot, at least.

So, Miami wins a ridiculously fun CFP game to earn a spot in the championship game … at home … and notorious choker Carson Beck comes up all kinds of clutch. Can’t spell whatever we’re spelling without the U, apparently.

So … college football has it’s finalists and it’s a Miami team that has done basically nothing for 20 years and an Indiana team that has done basically nothing in their whole football history up until last year when they stepped into the portal and came out good. People can bitch and moan about the NIL era all they want, at least it’s giving us something other than the same 5-6 teams over and over and over again.

I'm actually looking forward to this game and I don't really care who wins just as long as it's a competitive match up.
