You would hope the contract extension Makiniemi signed has an out clause if he comes to term with the Canes by the June 1, 2021 deadline.
I know our goaltending cupboard is pretty bare, but Makiniemi is the not very good backup on Ilves at the moment and hardly seems like much of an NHL prospect. Ilves starter is 20 year old Lukas Dostal, a 3rd round pick by the Ducks in 2018. He has gone 10-1 with a 1.64 GAA and a .940 Sv% this season to Makiniemi's 4-3 2.92 GAA and .890 Sv%. Makiniemi's numbers for KooVee in the Mestis league last season were not very inspiring either.
At this point I think the Canes are more than willing to let Makiniemi fade away. There certainly doesn't seem to be a long term plan in goal right now for the Canes with Mrazek and Reimer both pending UFAs, Nedeljkovic looking like an AHL lifer and Helvig just holding a spot in the system because he still has 1 more season on his entry level deal. Pyotr Kochetkov, Jack LaFontaine and Jacob Kucharski are the only other goalies who Canes hold the rights to. Kucharski has played a grand total of 9 competitive games in the prior 2 seasons and has been terrible when he played. So while he is still Canes property, he might as well not be unless he has some sort of stunning dramatic turnaround. As for LaFontaine, the Canes should sell the heck out of the fact that there is no one else blocking his path to an NHL job right now if he signs here and proves capable. Pyotr Kochetkov of course is the wildcard we are pinning our hopes on. He actually just was recently sent down to the VHL, so at least he is playing again (I'm going to update his entry above in a few minutes).
I will be plenty worried that Jack LaFontaine will spurn the Canes and go sign somewhere before next season. He is going to end up earning himself a much better entry level deal if he keeps playing the way he has started this season. If the Canes want to get him signed before he becomes a UFA, they are going to need to offer him a max NHL salary and signing bonus NHL entry level deal to keep him away from the market.
