2020-21 Hurricanes Prospects and Wolves Thread

Anttoni Honka’s brother Julius finally signed with Dallas. Maybe little brother will come over next year?

Noel Gunler has been loaned to Bryna, also in the SHL. He wasn’t getting much playing time at Lulea.

Max Zimmer is back in the organization...sort of. He signed with the Greenville Swamp Rabbits.

Apparently, Gunler requested the move ... which some are painting as more evidence of his "troublesome character." Frankly, the kid wants to have a shot at the WJC team and needs playing time to do that, so ... whatever.

Didn't think Goaltenders were allowed to be captains...?

Goalies can’t be captains in either college or the NHL. NHL rule 6.1 prohibits goalies from being named captain or alternate. NCAA rule 6 says the same. However, the Canucks designated Roberto Luongo as a captain in 2008. He couldn’t perform the duties of the captain, and couldn’t wear the letter on the ice but it was symbolic of his stature within the team. Minnesota named 4 players as captains/alternates, so it’s probably the same for LaFontaine too.

edit: just to clarify, LaFontaine was named an alternate, they named a captain and 3 alternates. Same rules apply, he can’t assume the duties of the captain under rule 6.

Note that the Euro pro leagues were on International break so there were very few of our prospects who played last week. Alexander Pashin, who is ripping up Russian Juniors, was pretty much the only player who played a game last week. You will see his already ridiculous stats have been updated with additional ridiculous stats. The international break ends this week with most Euro leagues back in action.

Last week the Karjala Cup was played in Finland (Russia, Czech Rep., Finland and Sweden were the participants). As far as I can tell, out of our prospects, only Jesper Sellgren was a participant (Russia won). Sellgren had no points in 3 games. Players such as Alexsi Saarela and Andrej Nestrasil were playing in that tournament (Saarela has 8 goals in 11 Lliga games this season by the way....).

There is an article on The Athletic about Ryan Suzuki and his eye injury. I don’t know if we knew how serious it was, he has a permanent blind spot in the center of his right eye. But he said his peripheral vision is more important and that’s not affected. He finished the season in Saginaw, the team he was injured against, and had 13 goals, 22 assists in 23 games. The Saginaw coach uses a similar style to RBA and uses Hurricanes game tape in their film sessions.

Jack Drury got out at the right time. The Ivy League cancelled all winter sports.

Lucas Mercuri signed his National letter of Intent to play at UMass-Amherst. He had announced he was committing there in June. UMass made their first ever Frozen Four appearance in 2019, losing the final to Minnesota-Duluth. Their only other NCAA Tournament appearance was in 2007, with Jonathan Quick in goal. They’ve not had much of a program until recently, every coach between the first program coach, who left in 1922, and the current coach has had a losing record. For the longest time Quick was the only notable alumnus, but Conor Sheary and Cale Makar have come out of there more recently.

Looks like the Q starts up again tomorrow. Shawinigan and Blainville-Boisbriand are on the schedule.

We have live hockey tonight, if you get the Big Ten Network. Kevin Wall and Penn State visit Minnesota and Jack LaFontaine at 8:30.

Speaking of upcoming hockey...it sure would be nice if the World Junior tournament continues on a path to being a go! By the time Christmas comes, most of us will be jones'ing for some good hockey to watch and many of us will be off Christmas week to be able to enjoy it. But in this current environment never expect anything to go on as scheduled...or planned!

The Greenville Swamp Rabbits are retaining their affiliation with the Charlotte Checkers rather than staying with the Canes. There are only 26 teams in the ECHL and their site doesn’t show the Canes with an affiliate. The Norfolk Admirals don’t have an affiliation, but as members of the Northern Division, they’re not playing in the 2020-21 season

IIRC the most contracted players the Canes had parked in Greenville at any one time last year was two ... and it was just one for the vast majority of the season. Shrug. Carolina seems to be leaning towards leaving their European prospects at home until they're AHL-ready, which is a way to go.

Not a big deal. With so many of our prospects in Europe or college its not like our AHL affiliate is overstocked with prospects and we need to find homes for the overflow. There are other places to loan lesser prospects to if we ever had the need.

Jack LaFontaine allowed 1 goal, scored by Kevin Wall. :D

The best of both worlds. A solid win for LaFontaine, a nice goal by Wall. He looked pretty speedy and showed a nice forehand to backhand deke to beat LaFontaine.

He scored another a few minutes ago on an end to end rush and snuck a backhander past LaFontaine.
