I thought Lamps did a pretty good job at Chelsea, following up on a really good at Derby. I know it got away from him this season, but I blame the personnel people more than him. If they had simply upgraded at striker and maybe tinkered with the back 4 this offseason, I think they'd have been fine. Bug the money guys at the big clubs never seem content with that kind of thing.

After a 9th place finish last year that saw them in contention for a Europa League spot until the last few weeks of the season, Sheffield are relegated with 6 matches to go. They finished with 54 points last year; if they win out, they finish with 32 points.

A day after confirming their participation in the European Super League, Spurs sacked Jose Mourinho. Hopefully, this is the end for him, his clubs are increasingly joyless to watch, and the results aren’t there any more.

Honestly, the only joy left in Mourinho's professional life is his incessant sparring with the soccer media. And like Torts in the NHL ... even that gets old eventually.

Norwich and Watford have clinched promotion back to the Premier League after 1 year in the Championship. Brentford, Bournemouth, Swansea and Barnsley have clinched the playoff spots but not the final position. Brentford have 78 points, the others all have 77. Wycombe, Sheffield Wednesday and Rotherham sit in the relegation spots but Derby aren’t safe yet, Rotherham have 4 matches to play. Wycombe are toast, they could theoretically climb to 43 points but trail Derby by 13 goals. Sheffield Wednesday were docked 6 points for entering administration, those 6 points could be the difference between survival and relegation.

Brentford have to be hungry for it after falling just short last season. Either way I hope either them or Bournemouth make it out, because they're the most dedicated to scoring out of that lot and you know how I feel about that. Actually play to score goals or shove off. FWIW, American striker Darrell Dyke is killing it on loan (from Orlando City in MLS) at Barnsley. That's been a fun story to track.

Derby and Wednesday both going down would be a blow to the Championship. Those are two longtime stalwarts in the division, both with solid support ... despite Wednesday's ownership issues.

In the Championship, Norwich are champions, Watford grab the other promotion spot. In the playoffs, it will be Brentford/Bournemouth and Swansea/Barnsley in the playoffs. Brentford have never played in the Premier League and haven’t been in the First Division since being relegated in 1947, Barnsley had a 1 year spell in the 1997-98 season. Wycombe, Rotherham and Sheffield Wednesday go down, Wayne Rooney’s Derby eeked out a draw against the Owls to stay up by a point; they’d have gone down had not Sheffield been docked 6 points.

League Two wrapped up yesterday too. Cheltenham Town are champions and above the 4th tier for the first time since the 2008-09 season. Cambridge and Bolton got the other spots, Bolton got an immediate bounce back after being relegated from League One last season. Morecambe, Newport, Forest Green and Tranmere got the playoff spots. Southend and Grimsby were relegated, Southend for the first time in 101 years.

League One wrapped up today. Hull had an immediate bounce back to the Championship, winning the league. Peterborough United were 2nd. Blackpool, Sunderland, Lincoln and Oxford United got the playoff spots, with Oxford sneaking in over Charlton on goal difference. Rochdale, Northampton, Swindon and Bristol were relegated. For Northampton and Swindon, it was one and done.

Hull and the Posh have no business slumming it down in League 1, so good on them for the bounce back. 'Bout time for Sunderland too. C'mon the North.

And with their loss to Burnley yesterday, Fulham join West Brom and Sheffield. Sheffield’s spell was 2 years, Fulham and West Brom were one and done.

Sheffield really managed that second summer poorly. They made a strong enough statement in year one, going with the core of the group that gained promotion but failed to continue to upgrade. Shame ... it was a tough year for Sheffield teams with Wednesday getting the boot as well.

Nuno Espirto Santo will leave Wolves by mutual consent after the season. He had been there for 4 years, winning the Championship and bringing Wolves into European competition for the first time in 50 years. Could he end up at West Brom, with Big Sam leaving?

It was probably time, as his tactics seemed to have gone a bit stale this last season. He did a great job overall though, and blew past the longest tenure with Wolves in the Prem. I wouldn't be surprised to see him go back to Portugal or Spain rather than take another job in England though. Wolves are a VERY Portuguese-forward outfit.

Man City, Man U and Liverpool finish top 3. Leicester went into the day needing a win and a loss or draw by Chelsea to clinch 4th. Chelsea obliged, losing at Villa 2-1, but Leicester spit the bit, losing to Spurs. Leicester and West Ham get the Europa League Spots, Spurs get a spot in the Conference League. Arsenal finished a point behind Spurs in 8th, the first time since 1996 that they‘ll miss European football. Leeds finished 9th in their first year back, Everton dropped to 10th. Fulham, West Brom and Sheffield United had long since been relegated, Sheffield picked up a consolation win, 1-0 over Burnley. They still finished with 23 points.

In the Championship playoffs, Brentford play Swansea on Saturday for promotion. For Brentford, it would be their first season in the top division since 1947. Swansea were relegated in 2018 after a 7 year spell in the Prem, their only time in the league. In League 1, Blackpool play Lincoln City on Sunday and in League 2, Newport County play Morecambe on Monday.
