Speaking of which ... a weird, weird story about Berhalter broke yesterday. Apparently somebody from outside the program tired to blackmail him during the World Cup by contacting US Soccer with details surrounding a domestic violence incident between Berhalter and his then girlfriend and future/current wife when they were undergrads at UNC ... nearly 30 years ago. It involved alcohol and Berhalter kicking his date/wife in an argument. No arrest was made and according to Berhalter the authorities were never even involved. So I guess the blackmailer tried to smear Berhalter with what amounts to just a story. Which is ... a thing. Obviously I don't condone under-age drinking, a man striking a woman in anger, or being in Chapel Hill bars (the freaking worst), but this is obviously something the Berhalters dealt with and got past a long, long time ago.
This whole thing is nuts, honestly. US Soccer is investigating, and reassures us all that they do actually know that there's a camp coming up. They say they'll "have leadership in place" which sounds a lot like an interim scenario to me.
