Calgary placed Derek Ryan on waivers. He’s been on LTIR. If he does end up on the taxi squad, they’ll have to absorb a little over $2 million of his cap hit and they don’t have that available.

Pittsburgh placed Sidney Crosby on the Covid list.

Calgary needs to waive Derek Ryan to allow them to continue to rotate him back and forth to the taxi squad still now that he is coming off LTIR. He cleared waivers at the beginning of the season and had played 10 NHL games before getting hurt and was going up and down from taxi squad to active roster (and back) to bank cap space prior to his injury. Once he clears waivers he will be going back on the taxi squad/active roster yo-yo. I suspect Calgary will have some other player end up on LTIR to solve their pending cap issue.

Canes are in the same position if they want to shuttle Lorentz back to the taxi squad now. He would need to be waived before he can get back to the taxi squad.

We have been rightfully picking at Jeff Skinner, but Eric Staal has stunk too. Just 3 goals, 5 assists and -11 for Buffalo. I'm sure he will be begging for a trade out of there before the deadline.
 
Calgary fired head coach Geoff Ward and replaced him with Darryl Sutter who signed a contract through the 2023-24 season. Ward replaced Bill Peters in November 2019. Sutter has been an advisor to the Anaheim Ducks since July 2019. He hasn’t coached since leaving the Kings after the 2016-17 season. He coached the Flames for 3 seasons from 2002-06, leading them to the 2004 Cup Finals.

Given how things were going in Anaheim I was a bit surprised that Sutter didn't end up with that job before Calgary had the chance to re-hire him. You know how it goes in Calgary though. There is no problem that "getting tougher" can't solve, right? Sutter's an old pro and I know he'll be an improvement over whatever the heck Geoff Ward was trying to do, but that organization has issues man.
 
Brett Seabrook is officially "calling it a career" due to multiple lingering injuries. He has 3 more years left on his deal with Chicago after this season, with $8 out of the $15 million remaining actual pay in the form of signing bonuses ($6.875 cap hit). Those signing bonuses make it harder to trade that contract for its 'cap space value' because the team holding that contract will have to pay Seabrook the signing bonuses. So expect to see Chicago moving this contract to LTIR at the beginning of each of the next 3 seasons.

Chicago made multiple LTIR moves today to maximize cap flexibility by putting Seabrook, Andrew Shaw and Zack Smith all on LTIR today at the same time.

Blackhawks' Seabrook calls it a career because of injury (yahoo.com)

Not that Chicago is going to use it, but they have almost $23 million in 'above the cap' room they could deploy with all of the players they have on LTIR.

Honestly ... if they keep hanging around the playoff line and feel they have a legit chance to beat Columbus to that last spot, they could be a player at the deadline. May as well. Their market and press never really bought the "rebuilding" phase they were supposed to be starting this season. If there's a serious but expensive target available at the deadline who fits their needs ... why not swing big?

They’d be fools not to, as long as it doesn’t do too much harm to their prospect pool. They don’t have anyone else’s draft picks to play with, just their own, absent this year’s 3rd rounder they gave up in the Andrew Shaw deal.
 
Really depends what the plan is and the cost. Is now really the time for Chicago to trade a 1st round pick for an expensive rental? Or add players with term that you might have a problem protecting in the expansion draft? I don't think Chicago is a deadline acquisition or 2 away from even being able to get out of our division. They run a risk of endangering their rebuild by trying to chase success in this wacky season.
