2022-23 Canes Misc. Thread

With the Canes D effectively leading the scoring the past couple of weeks, if you are wondering what the franchise's NHL record is for most goals scored in a season by Defenseman, the number is 51, accomplished by the Whalers in each of their first 2 NHL seasons.

In 1979-80, Mark Howe, Al Sims and Gordie Roberts had 42 of the 51 goals scored by Dmen
In 1980-81, Mark Howe, Al Sims and Thommy Abrahamsson had 42 of the 51 goals scored by Dmen

The Canes record is 48, set in 2018-19 (Dougie Hamilton, Justin Faulk and Jaccob Slavin had 37 of those).

We can certainly expect the Canes Dmen this season to fall off their blistering pace of the past 2 weeks. The Dmen have scored 14 goals in the past 8 games. But the Canes and franchise records are definitely in jeopardy. The Canes Dmen already have 30 goals scored in 45 games which would put them on pace to finish with 55 goals.

Something useless to keep an eye on while we wait to see if the Pacioretty season ending injury spurs significant action by the Canes front office.
Honestly, I don't feel like Burns has hit his stride yet ... mostly because the power play has been so woeful ... so if he gets on a heater before the end of the season, then it would make up for Skjei's inevitable return to being a normal turtle. Also neither Slavin nor Pesce has had much shooting luck this season. Both of them are candidates to pick up the pace a bit in the second half. Bottom line, I don't really care that much but I think they've got a shot at 50.

Friedman has stated that Vancouver is asking for a young center as part of the package in return for Horvat. That is a no go for the Canes unless they can somehow convince Vancouver that KK fits that requirement. Trading Necas for Horvat doesn't make any sense and obviously Aho isn't getting traded.

So they aren't getting an NHL center from the Canes unless they will take KK or Jack Drury. My willingness to part with Seth Jarvis depends on my mood at any given moment. I would trade Turbo if we had to.

The prospect pool isn’t what it was. Scott Wheeler is in the process of updating his team prospect rankings. He had the Canes at 9 in last year’s analysis which was done in February. He had Morrow, Suzuki, Koivunen, Gunler and Drury as 1-5 and said any of the first 4 could be listed at 1. Rees, Honka, Keane (gone), Puistola and Bokk (as good as gone) were the next 5. Koochie, Nybeck, Fensore, Ponomaryov, Blake, Heimosalmi, Nikishin (signed in the KHL until 2025), Hreschuk (gone), Seeley and Pashin were 11-20. While not bare, it’s a lot sparser than it was last year and will turn on how he ranks the 2022 draftees. Corey Pronman gave the Canes a B and said all of the top 4; Trikozov, Perevalov, Forsmark and Lucius could eventually play in the league.

I think Waddell will have to move someone on the roster. Turbo has a 10 team NTC, CapFriendly also shows Stastny, Slavin (he’s untouchable), Burns, Skjei and Andersen having some sort of NTC.
This is a monster draft class, so picks are worth a bit more than in an average year. That said, I think most of Carolina's prospect pool would be in play. Hold back Nikishin and Morrow for obvious reasons ... but anybody else is probably fair game.

Vancouver loves an iffy contract, so ... yeah. So long as the Canes don't end up getting suckered in to thinking Kane is going to magically improve on a better team, they're probably going to have to over-pay for quality. They've had success dealing with St Louis before and I do wonder what Tarasenko's gonna cost somebody. He fits the sniper bill a lot better than a lot of the other guys who are probably on the market.

With Patches out for probably the rest of the season (yes, speculation on my part), any trade that Waddell can work out will probably cost the team more since the need level has increased. So, who is our likely tradebait? Turbo? Jarvy? Or maybe someone in the system that Vancouver may have its eye on plus a draft pick?
I think any trade discussions with Vancouver involving a young player like Bo Horvat starts at Jarvy and a first round pick plus probably another young asset. The reason Horvat will be coveted because you get that guy signed to a long term extension and have a solid number two center for years to come, even non-playoff teams would be in on a guy like Horvat.

Count me in the "no thanks to overpay" for a guy like Kane...someone will overpay, but I'm not sure the Canes should go that route.

I wish the Canes could get Kase back playing to see what they may have in him as a fit on this team to assess what way they want to go with adding another player or two.

If you're interested in seeing RBA's son play, Skyler and his Quinnipiac teammates (who are currently the #1 ranked team in college hockey) are playing at my alma mater #16 Cornell right now. The game is on ESPN+. (This is the case for most ECAC hockey games, but getting to watch Cornell play is an added bonus!)

LET'S GO RED!

I might have to. The Villanova-St. John’s game isn’t doing it for me. They’re a combined 8-31 at the under 8 TV timeout

I remember a few centuries ago when skyler was thinking of giving up hockey. Brindy asked colin Muldoon to work with him.
this appears to be the result.

Let the medical second guessing begin.
The loss of Max Pachioretty is a devastating one for him - and for our hope to use his skill and experience to take us to the playoff promise land. I was impressed with his enthusiasm in coming to Carolina and can only imagine how he must feel. Whether he one day plays for us or any team, I'm praying for him and his family.

I'm not sure what anybody is supposed to be second guessing. The guy tore his achilles in off season workouts, got the most up to date surgical procedure done in a normal period of time, worked hard in rehab, got cleared within the normal recovery window for the surgery, re-gained his stamina and then joined the team. He played well for a few games and then re-injured the achilles. It sucks for all involved, but it happens.

Replace the tendon with some titanium wire and add a hole in the back his leg where wd40 can be sprayed in occasionally.

According to what I read. (I know I know but I am NOT an MD. nor a sports medicine Achilles specialist) After the damage he likely had it is more likely then baseline that it will happen again.
And more time can reduce the risk but never to 0..
Maybe a month more may have dropped the chance a bit.. But I don't think any of the doctor's short changed him.. I just HATE the result.. he worked hard to come back and for it to happen again is just terrible luck

No one will feel sorry for a front runner to lose an important player to injury, it’s what Dandy Don and company do to counter the Patches loss that is most important now! The cap space is there and I trust management to plug that loss with someone of value before the deadline!

From what I've been told by a doc who ought to know about these things, the MRI on Monday is less about determining the nature of the injury and more about determining the viability of surgical repairs of the type required for pro athletes. There's a very real chance that Pacioretty's career is over, but barring that there's almost no chance he'll be skating again before the summer. And yeah, it sucks. Terrible outcome for all involved.

The Canes cancelled tomorrow’s scheduled practice. They’ll practice on Tuesday and have media availability before getting on the plane to Dallas.
