2023 Draft and UFA Thread

So the greatest odds are to drop one and pick 6th. That's what the talking heads have to make the draft plans for and not eff up.

not sure about that, Trudeau is more virulently anti-Russia than Biden is. Hell our foreign minister is calling for Russian regime change
I’m sure you understand how things have often worked….US tells Canada what to say/do….in this case, it’s less provocative when Canada says it, rather than the US.

But we all know Trudeau checked with Biden administration before making such statements

Bedard, Fantilli, Carlsson look to be sealed as the top-3, probably in that order. If the whole world wasn't scared of Russians, Michkov would easily be a candidate at #2, but as is, I think there's a real chance Will Smith goes 4th and Michkov is available at 5.

If it goes down that way, and they insist that they don't want to draft Michkov, I would implore them to trade down a couple of slots. Call Washington, they're not scared of Russians, and see if they'd be willing to give up their 2nd to move up to 5.

It’s not all or nothing.

If opportunities come up that make sense, take them and adjust accordingly. Contract expiries that presents interesting opportunities don’t always align with a core age group’s apparent window, so it’s not a tragedy if someone is a touch older than Nick Suzuki if you can get 5 or 6 good years. Perfection is the enemy of the good.

The perfect tear down and rebuild is super rare, maybe the best recent attempt was Chicago. But I wouldn’t hold my breath, hockey doesn’t easily give us the Atlanta Braves or Manchester United of the 1990s where stars were freakishly aligned.
