2024-25 Canes Miscellaneous Thread

Jaccob Slavin is not one of the 6 named to the Olympic team. Both Tkchuks, Mathews, Eichel, Quinn Hughes and Charlie McAvoy were named.

Criminal if it meant anything meaningful…Charlie should give up his spot to Slavin just on principle!!! I thought Slavin might have been the best Team USA player on the ice the whole tournament even if I was an unbiased fan...

Meh ... pretty sure that was a olive branch to the Bruins for how they thought MacAvoy's injury was managed at 4 Nations.

And, as CC points out, it doesn't mean anything really. Team USA has more than 6 locks for that roster, and they picked 6. Cool. Same with Canada.

For your amusement and discussion….

Yeah, one would hope they're divided on a favorite for next year. It's all of 12 hours into the off season and Carolina is the only one of the contenders with anything like a set roster. And even then, everyone expects them to make changes. What in the heck is wrong with waiting until the end of July before setting odds?

Robinson re-signs 4 x 1.7. He set career marks with us in GP (82), G (14), A (18), and Pts (32) last year, as well as a 59.3 CF%... a good winger to keep around. We'll see about the 4th year though when he's 34 but a nice bit of business for the team to wrap up early.

Last year he was at 950K, but before that a 3-year deal signed with Columbus at 1.6M, so this takes him back into that neighborhood.

Robinson was an extremely useful player to have around last season. Up and down the lineup, he didn't look out of place in any role we gave him. Great price point for the Canes, likely at the expense of having to go 1 or 2 seasons longer than the Canes would have liked to. I approve.

Put it this way, I checked The Athletic's player card on Robinson ... he's barely a plus player but he ranks out at roughly the same game impact as Kotkaniemi for a quarter of the price. AND he kills penalties. Good depth, good effort guy, very flexible in terms of usage. That's good value for $1.6 mil AAV and locking him up for 4 years keeps them from having to go hunting for the same profile in free agency every year. All good.

For my tastes a bargain for what he does. He plugs in nicely almost everywhere and you don’t have to worry about him getting outworked or making a bonehead play when you need it the least. I don’t mind giving the 4th year on a guy like Robinson.

I thought the KK contract was a good value and would age well. I no longer think that given the guy’s brain cramps and streaky play. Seeing JB say that Robertson and KK are similar stat wise, but what the Canes are paying for KK v Robertson makes it that more cringey.

KK had great potential and when you have a guy like that, you take a chance. Had he lived up to his potential, his contract would've been awesome value. But you know what? All of this is a crapshoot whether you are using pure analysis or just the good ol' fashioned eye test, it's a crapshoot.

The hill I'll die on is that when you ID a young guy on your team that you think will be awesome for years to come, you sign that kid to a long term deal at that moment in time's market value because a price for a good player will only increase with time. Just ask anyone football GM with an overpriced QB that they could've signed years earlier at a cheaper price (cough! Cowboys/Dak! cough!). Sometimes it works and your front office are staffed with geniuses and sometimes it doesn't work and your front office staff is a bunch of idiots. What can you do?

I'm just happy that this team finally took a real chance on someone they thought was going to be a great player. It didn't work out for them this time around, but I hope they don't quit taking chances.

Honestly, the most disappointing think about Kotkaniemi for me is that he's wilted in the playoffs two years in a row. No matter how disappointed Montreal was in the guy (plenty, as we all know), at least they got good value from him during that playoff run in 2021. In four subsequent playoff runs with Carolina, he's been a cipher three times and was kinda, sorta useful in 2023. That's just not good enough.
