2024 NHL Playoffs Thread

I agree about the Nurse penalty. But the others were OK, IMO. Break a stick on a guy and it will get called every time. And Zadorov's check was clean and frankly awesome. Then he gets his stick held in the bench. If anything, Zadorov didn't deserve it. You're allowed to try and pull your stick away from someone who's holding it.

Speaking of Zadorov. What a steal by the Canucks. So even the Aves lose a trade sometimes.

The ekholm one was the worst

Cant wait for that gross overpay in the summer for Zadorov .....Tyler Myers part 2

Right now, McDavid and Draisatl are basically a rich man's Matthews and Marner aka playoff losers
Not quite. Unlike Marner and Matthews McJebus and Draisaitl are scoring. It's the other 3 lines who aren't doing anything. And even so, with even Primeau level goaltending this series would be 3 love in favor of Edmonton.

.733 goaltending doesn't win you anything, McDavid notwithstanding.

both sets don't win when it counts, you saw 97's frustration when he 2 handed Soucy, constantly losing in the playoffs is harming his legacy
But unlike 34 and 16, 97 and 29 aren't the literal reason their teams lose. No one is ever pointing fingers at McDavid or Draisaitl after a playoff elimination because they are inevitably the most productive players in the series. The Oilers lose in spite of the heroics of 97 and 29. By contrast, Toronto gets eliminated because Matthews and Marner are shitting the bed. One set of players are built for the playoffs and one set isn't.

which only makes them a rich man's 34 and 16, they still end up losers. It is like when Romo would throw for 450 yards, score 48 points but lose, he took the blame for being a loser, even though he did his job (and yes he did fuck up many a time himself)

At the end of the day, the Oilers had 1st overall 4 of 6 years and haven't even gotten to a final.

If they lose this year, they are losers, pure and simple until proven otherwise.

Romo threw picks. Lots and lots and lots of poorly timed, soul-crushing picks in consequential situations. So does Dak. And football, while also a team sport, is extremely QB-centric. The hockey equivalent to a QB isn't a center like McDavid, it's a goalie.

And Skinner would have to aspire to be as mediocre at his job as Romo or Dak were/are at theirs.

I admitted Tony did but he also had games where he was flawless and was still blamed. Like 97, he had to do more because the rest of the team was crap.

At the end of the day, as you would say, no cups equals a wasted career. McDavid is already counting the days until he is number 2 centre in Toronto

McDavid is not going to Hogtown. If and when he leaves Edmonton he's going to a US team that can buy him a Cup. The Leafs are more inept than the Oilers. He's from Toronto so he knows better than most that the path to a championship does not go through that city. It's where dreams of a championship go to die.

He'll find a US market with no state taxes and he'll win the Cup there. And when Matthews' contract runs out he'll be headed south too. Canadian teams have to draft their superstars and then they have to try and win with them asap because no one that good ever stays in Canada for their entire career anymore. They either leave to chase a Cup or they have their success in the US and come home to play for their home town team for a season before they retire.

Matthews had the chance to leave and signed an extension for five more years, for whatever reason, he wants to stay in Toronto

He didn't sign for 8 years though. He could have, but he didn't. He's not staying for another contract. He gone. And if the fit hits the shan and the Leafs become a dumpster fire he'll be gone even sooner.

Seems the Oilers always end their seasons the same no matter who they add or what changes they make. Poor goaltending, shoddy defence, and no depth. Of course the series could still take a major turn, but it looks all too familiar.

Of course not, that’s because he’ll be 31 allowing him to look for an 8-yr retirement contract.

And he will almost guaranteed sign w Leafs or a Cdn team because both his contracts post ELC have been heavy bonus structured for which he maximizes on take home in a Cdn market & which no US team can match unless they pay anywhere from $3M -$4M more per year which won’t happen since he’s already close to max cap % (at 15.5%)
