2025 Draft

yeah…. Bergy was constantly flip flopping between short term trading and long term investing. Not 100% his fault because he was given the very complicated task of “competitive rebuilding”

I have a lot more faith in the less emotional type that is Ken Hughes…. But as others have pointed out, the tearing down part is easy.

The real test is this summer. Can Hughes address our obvious shortcomings. I believe he will.

I believe he will . . . try.

He’ll make a bunch of smart bets. Time will tell if they pay out.

Technically he gave up Romanov+98th (which became 13th) and 66th for Dach.

Romanov and those picks were spare parts at the time. Even that 13th was in a weak draft, I don't think he makes that deal just for that pick.
So probably similar value to 15 OA this draft

Bergevin was paralyzed because he had an incoherent strategy of trying to push a veteran club over the top without sacrificing the future. He didn’t fish or cut bait. Eventually you have to pay for talent. (TT’s comical drafting record didn’t help.)

HuGo has a very different context.

Also, I think the other reason players didn’t sign here is because the team stunk. (See TTs drafts.) Good players want to play with other good players in all industries - cluster effect. So I would say that Demidov and an improving roster is a bigly incentive for potential 2Cs.
MB got us a good 2C though. Danault.

And I'd say a team with Price and Weber should have been able to attract.

I agree. That’s what I like about them, they take their shots, some work out, some don’t. MB was often hesitant to take his shots.
Was he though? He didn't seem hesitant to me and maybe even a bit risky

Maxpac for Suzuki
Subban for Weber
Serg for Drouin
First and second for Dvorak
Domi for Anderson
Kovalchuk
Chuk for domi
Vanek

Those are kinda deck chair on the titanic moves, with the exception of Pacioretty which was his big hit. Perth wasn’t a bad move. I don’t think Drouin counts because he was still an uncertain quantity due to his somewhat stormy time in TB.

Fundamentally, he needed to add real, demonstrated talent without hurting the core. It would have meant sacrificing the future and he just didn’t get there.

That was his Serg trade. It didn't work.

If he would have got a 1C we would have been contenders. Instead we really needed McCarron, leblanc, tinordi, etc

I give Bergevin zero credit for acquiring Suzuki because his first choice was Cody Glass. He "settled" for Suzuki when the Knights stupidly refused to part with Glass.

I like what Dvorak is bringing right now but a 1st and a 2nd was too steep a price.

For Drouin, I'll give him a mulligan. Sergachev has had a decent career but he was never winning a Norris and was never the difference between winning and losing. Drouin, had he panned out, would have been a superstar. I can't fault Bergy for taking that shot.

And regardless of why he traded PK, Weber was the better player and was far more consequential in terms of wins than Subban was. PK was a sideshow while Weber was a true leader. Again, not sure if I'm going to give too much credit to Bergy here because the Subban trade was more about the off-ice stuff and even if Weber had not been available, Bergy would have got rid of PK that summer. So we should be glad that he managed to get value because PK was gone, even if all we could get in return was a used jock strap.

Both Vegas and Montreal saw Glass as the better prospect back then, and he was, 6th overall vs 13th overall, they didn't have benefit of hindsight. But Montreal still saw enough value in Suzuki to make that deal. Suzuki was the key piece coming back from Vegas, so it's not like it was a throw in that we lucked on.

He also could have no to Suzuki and ended it there but he didn't so of course he deserves credit for that trade. It's silly/petty to say otherwise.

Another good point….Danault….

So basically Bergy got us a 1C and 2C…

Problem was Suzuki wasn’t ready yet, so we decided not to pay Danault.

If Danault‘s contract was up this summer, after witnessing Suzuki’s 89-point season, for sure Habs would re-sign Danault

Yup, that was the point I was trying to make. Also that there was nothing wrong about preferring Glass back then, as he was seen the more promising prospect of the two by pretty much everyone.
