Around the League 2019-2025 Edition

I'm not sure there was a dip with Petry; more like an IPO that took a while to get going.
Meh oilers had him pegged as a number 1/2 for a few years and kind of soured on him near the end as he took the blame for their shortcomings. Which was always dumb of course. I'm calling it a dip buying scenario.

Tom Wilson scores a nice one. He'd look good on the Leafs.

Habs too for that matter.

They said the same against Pittsburgh.

Habs won without a single PP goal. The penalty kill was good though.

This isn’t Pittsburgh - why I’m saying that. Thinks 5 on 5 philli will grind more and get a better forecheck on the habs. Special teams will become more important

Hot takes get you paid. Dont worry. It's hockey. I think flyers are big time favorites but it's a 7 game series. Anything can happen.

Those are the risks you need to take if you want to buy the dip on a player

It's not a stock though. It's a human being that is near guaranteed to decline and be useless within the next couple of years. Niskanen is almost 34.

This is simple risk reward, if you're the Leafs, with the Leafs cap structure, you can't afford to spend 5.75m on a defender who might have just shown their first signs of decline.

Yeah, it would be great if we could get all of the players we want, but there's a thing called the cap.

The other thing of course is that Petry was 27. If there was a "dip" a bounce back is much, much more likely a 28-30 than it is from 33-35

Someone had to take Zautsev.

Ceci trade still brilliant

The Niskanens, Weber's and muzzin's of the world should be fine by that age. Worthwhile risk to take if the potential upside is high enough. Maintaining status quo on this d corps ain't it. And neither is trading a core player for a top four d. So make your bold move. Buy dips. Do your homework and take a risk. This guy was a year off from being an elite #1 d and he was traded for fucking gudas.

Instead of spending 4.5 on Ceci and 10+ mil on your third line, maybe spending a little extra on a top four d is a more efficient use of cap space. They can fit him. And he doesnt have to be a #1 or 2 d to be worth his contract. He's underpaid right now. Maybe he'll be overpaid later but I dont mind his odds of being half decent in his last year or two for a player of his caliber.

Bet the Wild would guve away Suter

I would like them to win one more series. I still don't think they have the horses but the experience the young guys are getting could be more valuable than the #9 pick. Especially the way the Habs draft in the first.
