Cap considerations aside, EDM would refuse to trade him to the Leafs simply out of spite

Yeah, but Connor has NMC so that turns into a game of chicken.

On our side of it though it's not even cap considerations really. It's assets. Someone is going to throw really good players at them for Connor. Our obvious guy (Mitch, imo) to headline a Connor trade has a NMC.

I figure he goes to Dallas for a Robertson headlined package, or the Rangers for a rebuild kick start. Lafreniere, Kaako, Miller/Schneider, Chytil, Prospects (Othmann, Perreault) and a 1st. The classic 8 quarters for a hundred dollar bill trade.

If it happens it’d be like the first Lindros trade since the Lindros trade.

But I doubt there’s any trade coming. If the Oilers can’t win with McD and Drai, then why should any other team think they could with him and some new sidekick or two.

It would end up like the last Lindros trade, where the team getting the grab bag wins the cup, like the Nordavs did.

The Lindros trade was a special event. McDavid isn't getting that kind of haul.

Oilers trading the leafs Ekholm and leafs going on to win the cup largely because of him would be the ultimate kick in the balls for oilers nation.

It won't happen. They won't trade him. But that would be one hell of a way to break the cup drought.

The Oil have one more year of Drai under contract and two more of McDavid.

So even if those guys come to them and ask for a trade, I think they’d double down and try absolutely everything to win next year in an attempt to convince them to stay before they’d trade them.

Though if it gets to the point where Drai’s already fucked off as a UFA and McDavid’s a pending UFA who isn’t willing to talk extension, all bets are off.

Maybe, but I think more likely is that Drai refuses to even consider an extension and the new front office panics and doesn't have much of a choice but to sell.

Oilers would be smart - though hated - if they sold both now. Next year, Drai becomes an expiring asset worth less than he would be with 1.5 years left now. And Mcdavid would obviously waive to go anywhere if Drai gets moved.

But current management can’t do it, they won’t be around to oversee the return assets. So they press on, hoping to right the ship at some point soon.
