Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

I mean, it's nice that both sides decided not to squabble over the scraps, but my guess is it's more of a realization that at least with the current revenue linkage, it's in both sides interest to grow the game back, and it really doesn't make sense to be publicly fighting over billions of dollars when the world is still in a panic. Although I would expect the next CBA to be a tougher battle as both sides re-assess how they have done through the pandemic.

Both sides are going to go through pain especially south of the border

Canada drives 40% of the revenues , with no fans , luxury boxes etc... for a while its going to be a battle to get revenues ramped up

Battle over what?

the players were already soundly beaten in the last lockout. had there been no pandemic Weasel could have squeezed even harder though. there's still a bit of juice to be had with contract lengths, methinks, among other things.

next time.

Yep. The current system has been very, very good for the owners. Good enough that, under normal circumstances, the players might’ve dug their heels in more on escrow, and the revenue linkage being as high as it is for the owners.

And yeah, under normal circumstances, I’m sure Gary the weasel would have also tried to find more ways to squeeze the players. After all, never before had he negotiated a CBA without a work stoppage.

In the end though, best for both sides to kick the ball down the road.

Also, the Olympics is a pretty damn cheap bone for the owners to toss the players. Especially considering it’s far from certain there will be any Olympic competitions for the foreseeable future.

The players also won the last time. They weren't beaten.

The owners got their Olympics, and kept the system that works.

Weird how after all these years people still think the owners were just engaged in a winner takes all bad faith negotiation, rather than a simple and rational goal of an effective cost to revenue linkage.

There was never anything that was going to bring a hardline from the owners this year.

Seems like some aren't recognizing the need for stability for the owners. Can't run a business properly without that stability. It's a win for the owners and players to kick the can down the road a few years under the present circumstances.

yeah. owners will still have the hammerlock a few years down the road here, they can be patient. business has to get back to normal first and that will take a while.

Apparently Brock Boeser is on the trade block. I realize he's had injuries and not lived up to the hype his first year, but it's just funny Vancouver has no cap before they even see the playoffs and this comes out.

Ericksson: 6M x 2 more season
Sutter: 4.38 for 1 more seaso
Roussel: 3M for 2 more seasons
Beagle: 3M for 2 more seasons
Baertschi: 2.29 for 1 more seasons
Spooner: 1.03 for 1 more seaso
Luongo: 3.03M for 2 more seasons

So 23.73M in pure waste

Then you have questionable contracts as well.
