Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

I mean, if I'm a Habs fan I'd almost rather be horse shit to tank and at least have a chance to grab elite talent. But they're too good. They're an average-above average hockey team, much like the Leafs have been for the last few years. I do think the Leafs have improved enough to take the next step though. And personnel-wise they have the start talent that Montreal lacks. The hardest guys to get, and you can't really win without them.

They're too good...but finished bottom 5 last year.

Now a Domi for Anderson flip, a 20 goal Toffoli signing, a new backup, and Joel Edmundson patrolling their blueline makes them very possibly better than us? Wha?

Not better. But they could finish ahead of them, yes. It's the NHL after all.

Yeah I'm very mixed on them because they score like an elite team on the nerdies. But without star power it doesn't really mean dick all. Not sure why they continue to add middling talent.. There was a legitimate chance for them to get some offensive juice in the lineup this offseason and instead they gave all the money to a backup goalie, Edmunson and Anderson. Toffoli was their only good move and he won't move the star power needle; he's just more of what they already have.

For such a good team, their GM really likes to sabotage them. They're not as far off as most think. They need a "closer" GM. Clearly Bergevin ain't it.

they missed their tanking window; got the 3rd pick a few years ago, were a lottery team this year until COVID "saved the day"

I think they're awesome and can easily finish ahead of the Leafs next year (unlikely, but not impossible). But they are probably not going to win the cup. And they're clearly at least 2 elite pieces away from truly contending. Which would be fine if they weren't capped out.

But yeah, overall, I think they're really good.
2 elite pieces might be an overstatement... but yeah, they're short at least 1 star player from being a legit contender. Of course, if you added 2 elite players to the line up they'd be a Cup favorite.

I think I'm comfortable with 2 elite pieces. The fact that they don't even have 1 is crazy and really rare. Even Buffalo has 1.

They made one good offseason move, maybe, two.
They made one really good move. Adding Toffoli on that contract was a very good move.

The cost of acquisition and the cost of contract on the rest of their moves are varying degrees of "bad to decent."

That said, the overall quality of the team has risen dramatically, regardless of cost.

Domi, a 3rd and a couple of 5th out.... Toffoli, Anderson, Edmundson, Allen and Romanov in.

That should be a dramatic improvement. In the long run will the contracts be a problem? It seems likely that one or more of them could be an issue... but right now, we are significantly improved.

And of course it's never a given, but I think it's reasonable to expect some improved contribution from Suzuki and Kotkaniemi.

What they lack in top end, they make up for in quality of depth. Of course they're not a real contender unless their special teams are improved dramatically with these moves.

9 mil on anderson and edmunson isnt exactly efficient use of cap space though. Those 2 vs hall and bogosian (or another $1MM defender) which would you prefer?

The habs are better than before but they could have used the money better IMO

Yeah and special teams, in particular their PP, won't be very good until they find some high end talent. Removing some middling guys, not signing Edmunson at all, and aiming higher in free agency or trades would have been the way to go. Taylor Hall or hell even Dadonov would have been far better targets that fill a greater need. They had the space to do it.

Agree with all but don't see the dramatic improvement.
