Why didn't someone else then? There were other teams with the space.

Habs had a budget of $5.5M or under. Toffoli is $4.25M.

Granted, the guys he's extending are not garbage, but the team's performance is, and I don't think adding a complimentary piece here and there is going to make anywhere near enough of a difference. And certainly not to justify taking Petry and Gallagher into the sunset with Price and Weber. Those two are going to shortly join the latter two as immovable contracts in a few years.

The only way that happens is if something totally blows up for us. Like Matthews and Tavares both go down with injury at the same time, Andersen gets injured long term, etc.
 
What's not being considered here is the older guys, none more important than 35 year old Weber. Whatever happens this season, it will involve a condensed schedule. That's bad for older players because one of the biggest issues for older athletes is recovery time.

For sure. Any extended injury to Weber or Price and they're toast. It's a valid concern.

Price will get rest from Allen, Weber not so much.

But flip that, you now have a ton of veterans on this team, some recent cup winners, and that will play well in the playoffs and in close games.

They're the x factors for sure. But bubble performance was...Suzuki 57pt pace / Kotka 33pt pace.

Toffoli & Allen are the clearest upgrades for me. Toffoli's got a pretty consistent track record and it'd be surprise if he isn't a good top-6 forward for you. Likewise, it'd be very surprising if Allen isn't a big upgrade over the dumpster-fire backup goaltending you got last year.

Anderson and Romanov are both question marks.

Anderson because he's 26 years old and has cracked the 20-goal and 40-point marks once in his career, and it now seems to be the expectation that he's going to consistently reproduce or improve on that career high going forward. And will he be healthy? Will he stay healthy? What will he look like after sitting out most of a season (plus an extended off-season) with an injury?

Romanov because he's a 20 year-old kid who's never set foot on North American ice. Doesn't mean he's not a good prospect, and doesn't mean he might not be able to step in and be a good NHL player right away, but the odds are against him.

As for Edmundson...he's a #6/7 caliber defenseman, and it looks like Montreal's planning to play him in their top-4.

All that said, if there is a "Canadian division" next season, I'd bet on Montreal finishing ahead of Ottawa, Winnipeg, Calgary & Edmonton, which I'd imagine would give them a good shot at getting back to the playoffs.

Nah, the Leafs haven't been close to as good as the Leaf fans here have thought they are. Maybe that changes this year though.

Maybe they even win a playoff round
