Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

Sid is set for life in Pittsburgh and he would have gotten more and longer (if we wanted) on the open market but what's the point in moving now?

Yeah there is no point. If he can get another Olympic gold that would match his cups. He's a legend. And he's been a complete class act his entire career.

interesting that crosby only won cups when he was within 1-2% of the top caphit in the league.

ever since he started giving his team huge savings to "help his team win".....his team hasn't been able to win.

The issue is no one ever talks of cap hits unless they are big ones like 10+ per. One bad 4th line signing and that uses up his discount he gave.
One thing Rutherford did brilliantly was adding the support they were missing from the 2009 win to 2016 2nd cup.

That chart undersells the impact because it compares the highest cap hit relative to the cap that year, not the date the contract was signed.

Ovie signed his massive 13 year deal for 16.8% of the cap in 2008. Crosby's massive 12 year deal was only 13.5% of the cap at the start of the deal (which was also a paycut from his previous deal). He could have easily gotten the Ovie deal, if not more. 16.8% of the 2013-14 cap was $10.8 million.

And not only that, but the next year Malkin took 13.7% when he also could have gotten 16.8%ish (2 Art Ross, a Hart and a Conn Smyth). Which is $4+ mill in savings and the reason they could afford Kessel.

It likely won them 2 cups.
