Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

They cleared out OEL so they could spend alot of money on bumblebean bottom 6 guys like that super elite 4LC that i cant remember the name of.

I do appreciate the NHL giving us cutting edge technology that was available in fucking Football Manager 10-15 years ago....

Oilers not dealing well with Game 7 PTSD.

It's a very old roster. We've seen it here with guys who were real gud being not real gud in a hurry, there's a lot of potential for decline there.

Basically everyone other than Connor, Leon, Bouchard and Skinner are deep into the back 9 of their careers. Hyman is 32, Nuge 31, Skinner 32, Arvidsson 31, Henrique 34, Ekholm 34.

Even just a few completely forseeable things happening:

- Hyman backsliding to normal Hyman from this crazy 2 year run of his as 50 goal PPG Hyman
- Arvidsson not coming back fully from the back injury
- Eckholm going from stud matchup guy to just an okay matchup guy
- No bounce back for Skinner and this is the slide towards the end

and that's it for Edmonton as an elite team. Last year might have been the window. Way, way too early to tell (their first few months were ugly last year too) but the roster definitely has some land mines in there.

What I find comical about Deadmonton was, they had bad defense and unproven (to be kind) goaltending. So what did they do this summer? Let's improve our offensive depth, let's actually make our bad D even worse, and just hope the goalies - who were never all that good to begin with - figure it out. Oh, and we'll hire Stan Bowman to run shit. He knows what he's doing...

The final year for their window is this year. Evan Bouchard is on the last year of his contract and he's (reportedly) looking for a $10M+ AAV contract. Draisaitl's new deal kicks in next season. They have virtually no prospects, none of their bad contracts expire this summer, and they've already traded their most valuable future assets (2025 1st) for a middling prospect.

I do think they'll get their shit together & make the playoffs, but I'd be shocked if they made it to the finals again.

Just like the Leafs have left us with a regular season that's hard to care about, I'm guessing Oiler fans won't be caring about a bad start yet...same way Habs fans will be giddy with a few wins, but then, they're kinda dumb.
;)

Tough thing is they always fire the coach. Can they justify doing that again?
