It's weird that we've had such good success taking skilled players and giving them checking roles at international tournaments but we keep wanting to do the gritty grinder thing right up until we're calling hockey summits to figure out why we stopped winning. Then go back to a skill focus after the soul searching, win and rinse repeat the cycle.

If you want someone in a checking role, bring Suzuki... at least he can bring some offence too.

Kris Draper in 2006 was another brutal one. In 2010 and 2014 they had stars in checking roles.
I would get it in tehe 80;s, but star players now playing for the most part very good D.

Don’t forget the 2004 World Cup team that had both Draper AND Kirk Maltby on it.

Deepest hockey nation in the world and somehow we found room for two pluggers from Detroit’s 4th line among our top-12 forwards in a best-on-best international tournament.

Just absolute peak galaxy-brained, “good hockey man” stupidity.
