Around the League 2019-2025 Edition

Is there really any choice for a public figure there?

Yes.

When it comes to whether to oppose or support a brutal, murderous genocidal tyrant, there is always a choice.

I won’t claim that it’s always an easy choice. Or that making the right choice doesn’t often come at great personal peril for you & your loved ones.

But I’d posit that wasn’t the case with Mogilny. It should have been an easy choice. He, his wife & kids were all US citizens and had been living in North America for decades. And he had plenty of wealth and wherewithal to keep himself and them safe & comfortable there. Both with the NHL money he’d already earned in his playing career and the continued NHL employment opportunities available to star ex-players.

Yet he made the decision to both return to Russia and hop into bed with Putin. Either because he’s a monster who genuinely believes in what Putin is doing, or because he’s an amoral POS who doesn’t give a shit as long as he can benefit from being a famous Russian hockey player in a country who’s dictator adores hockey.

Though I don’t know why he’s there unless for family reasons.

He’s been the Team President of a Russian KHL team for 12 seasons now, and was a ā€œconsultantā€ for the team three years prior to that.

So seems like a good bed that his ā€œreasonsā€ are the big bags of blood money he’s paid and the societal benefits and power that come from being in the good graces of the dictator of the country he lives in.
