Now the narrative is that they need to fire Keefe and hire Barry Trotz.
If it was coaching, why is Matthews' playoff disappearing act an annual event under multiple coaches? At some point you have to look at the common denominator for the answer: Matthews himself. It's time for the people who run the Leafs to accept the basic truth that their team is a fraud. When the coach, after a bad game, calls out his star players for underperforming and then has to retract those comments the very next day because Auston's feelings were hurt, that is a sign of willful ignorance on an institutional scale. Also, how many coaches does Dubas get to fire before it's his own ass on the line? Maybe the stats nerds don't actually know everything after all.

He won't change a thing. The problem isn't coaching, it's the complacency of the core. Unless or until the front office is willing to fuck with the Matthews-Marner-Nylander-Tavares club, the end results will continue being what they have been for the past few years. The rest of the team takes their cues from those guys. If those guys are fat and happy then everyone else knows that they don't need to pay attention to the coach. And firing the coach won't get their attention quite like trading one of those core pieces will. Right now, the players feel untouchable because they are. The only one in danger of losing their job is the coach. When that math changes then maybe some attention will be paid. But right now it's a country club.
