Around The League - 2024-25 Regular Season

Sometimes its just a popularity contest. How did Al Hamilton get his Edmonton jersey # 3 retired? Stan Smyl?

Sens losing again, I understand losing Norris is a big blow but they've been quite underwhelming so far. I liked the moves they made and thought we should follow a similar route in 2 or 3 years. Get the young core, 1 or 2 big UFAs when said young core is ready to compete, success. Guess they're still a bit too green.

Al Hamilton was the "Alberta", later Edmonton Oilers first team captain in the WHA and was the lynchpin of that team throughout its entire WHA existence. He was the first Oilers player to have his jersey retired and at the time of his retirement he was the franchise leader (WHA version) in GP, assists and points. He is more deserving than, say the Canucks' first ever captain Orland Kurtenbach, who was already a grizzled vet by the time he arrived and played fewer than 300 games in a Vancouver uniform.

Stan Smyl was also a captain and during his tenure was almost always the best player on some pretty mediocre teams. He led them to an improbable Cup finals run in 82 and at the time of his retirement he was the franchise leader in games played and points and had 8 consecutive 20 goal seasons.

Chris Neil? He fought Tie Domi toa draw a couple of times. But then again, when have the Sens ever not done something stupid?

I still blame Miller's parents, but their kid looks as though he's irredeemable now. It's simply gone on too long without any correction for anything to work now. Miller is at this point more than old enough to be a good liar. He has been concealing his actions for long enough that any expression of contrition on his part should be viewed as purely performative and lacking any shred of sincerity. You can certainly tell from the statements his mother has made since this all blew up that she regrets nothing, doesn't believe there's any actual problem, and thinks that because her son is good at hockey that he deserves a free pass. This kind of thinking could wind up with someone dying or being raped, with Miller in handcuffs and with the NHL having egg on its face for allowing this ticking time bomb to play in their league.

If I'm in Bettman's shoes right now, (well my feet probably hurt because he's a small man; a small, petty man) but once I kick those shoes off I'm putting out a statement that this person will NEVER play in MY league as long as I draw breath so he should start taking Russian lessons and calling the KHL if he wants to continue his career.
