Around The League - 2024-25 Regular Season

Because both the players and the owners know who makes the wheels go round. It's not the owners. No players, no fans, no NBA. Basketball players aren't just happy to be there. They know they have the power to make or break the league and they know that the league also knows that they have the power. So when a star player says to his team owner that he would "prefer" to be coached by someone else than the current coach, the current coach gets fired because coaches don't sell tickets.

Hockey players could do likewise if they weren't so collectively stupid.

They have power because the fool owners let it be

The crap that Simmons , Kyrie , and others pull off should have them banned for life

No, they have power because the NBA is a star-driven league. When it was a team-driven league it was less popular than even the NHL. The NBA finals were shown on tape delay.

The Celtics, who had a dynasty to rival the Yankees or Habs, couldn't draw as many fans to Boston Garden as the Bruins, who hardly ever won. They were only slightly more popular in Boston than the Patriots back when the Patriots' biggest star was Steve Grogan. All through the years of Cousy, Russell and Havlicek and banners year after year (8 straight NBA titles from 59-66) most Bostonians couldn't have cared less about the Celtics. It was like the Argos winning the Grey Cup. A collective yawn.

That all changed in the 80's when David Stern became Commissioner and it really changed for Boston when Larry Bird showed up. Stars matter and stars are what drove TV ratings, not teams. Bird, Magic, Kareem, Dr. J, Jordan.

The NHL never went that route. In part, it's because Canadians don't root for stars, they root for teams. It's also because NHL stars, the Canadian ones at least, were pretty boring except when playing. They were tough to market because they were inarticulate, simple guys who had been taught since birth not to boast or toot their own horns. And the league liked it that way because they saw that once you make stars out of players they start getting "uppity" and demanding. The people in charge of the NHL, the team owners, mostly wanted obedient dogs with no concept of their own worth. Keeping labor costs down was more important than making a few extra bucks from the allure of star players.

The only time the NHL deviated was when Gretzky went to LA and that was an exception. The league tried very hard to prevent it from becoming the rule. They've had to concede a bit since, now that the players union is no longer docile, but it's still nowhere near the NBA. But like I said, the NBA didn't have a choice. It was a dying sport in the late 70's.

Its a star driven league but the owners let a bunch of thugs, punks , and agents run their business

That shit that a few assholes pull off should be banned for life

What the fuck are owners and execs mortgaging a decade of draft picks to cater to a goof to run their business and not win anything for the most part

Fans are sick of this shit IMO watching clowns like Kyrie act like fools

Simply put them in their place and restore some sanity to this league

Playing in a solid hockey Canadian market is better than Columbus , Buffalo , Joisy , Zona , etc...
I never understood this hatred for Jersey.....

If i'm a hockey player, i wanna play in Jersey....you are playing in NY, without the media pressure......but you get to enjoy the pleasures of NYC

Most of the athletes live in New Jersey anyways....Giants, Jets, Rangers, Islanders, Knicks, Nets, Mets, Yankees......

This New Jersey hatred is mostly fan perceived.....New Jersey has a nice rink....New Jersey is one of the top income state in the US....it's not the swamp you think it is.....

Yes it is, with a few bright spots

I was once stuck in a plane on the tarmac in Newark for five hours. Gfy.

JFK is a zoo and LaGuardia is always top 5 in the country for delays, your personal anecdote not withstanding

You forgot your bag. Douche.

To each their own but I've flown to or through Newark dozens of times and usually had a bad experience. I just don't do it anymore. Enjoy the most delayed airport in the USA.
